CHAPTER 1 — THE WARDEN'S CRUEL GAME

No one in Blackstone Maximum Security Prison understood why the elderly inmate had been transferred there.

At sixty-eight years old, Viktor Sokolov looked nothing like the hardened criminals who filled the prison's concrete corridors. His shoulders were thin, his gray hair was neatly combed, and deep wrinkles surrounded calm blue eyes that rarely revealed emotion.

He walked slowly.

He spoke politely.

He spent hours reading history books in the prison library while everyone else gambled, fought, or planned their next schemes.

To most inmates, he looked like a retired schoolteacher who had somehow wandered into the wrong building.

That illusion lasted less than a week.

Because Viktor had already made one mistake that no prisoner—and certainly no prison employee—should ever make.

He told the truth.

Only days after arriving, Viktor witnessed several correctional officers dragging a nineteen-year-old inmate into a storage room.

The young prisoner had refused to pay protection money to a corrupt guard.

The screams echoed through the hallway for nearly ten minutes.

Most prisoners pretended not to hear.

Some lowered their heads.

Others simply walked away.

Everyone knew one rule.

If you wanted to survive...

You stayed silent.

But Viktor didn't.

That night, sitting alone beneath the weak light in his tiny cell, he carefully wrote a detailed report.

Every name.

Every injury.

Every word he had heard.

Every minute.

His handwriting remained perfectly steady.

Instead of hiding the letter inside prison walls, he addressed it directly to the regional prison oversight commission.

One honest guard secretly placed it into outgoing legal mail.

No one expected anything to happen.

Complaints disappeared all the time.

Except this one didn't.

Two weeks later, inspectors unexpectedly appeared at Blackstone Prison.

They interviewed inmates.

Reviewed surveillance footage.

Demanded medical records.

For the first time in years...

The prison warden looked nervous.

His name was Harold Briggs.

A man feared by every officer and inmate alike.

For fifteen years he ruled the prison like his personal kingdom.

Violence.

Extortion.

Illegal punishments.

Everyone knew.

No one spoke.

Until Viktor.

When Briggs discovered who had written the complaint, rage twisted across his face.

He couldn't openly attack the old man.

The investigation had already begun.

Every bruise would raise suspicion.

Every punishment would be questioned.

So Briggs smiled instead.

A slow...

Patient...

Dangerous smile.

"If I can't break his bones," he whispered to his deputy, "I'll let the inmates do it for me."

Everyone inside Blackstone feared one place more than solitary confinement.

Table Seven.

The longest table in the cafeteria.

Reserved for the prison's most violent criminals.

Contract killers.

Gang generals.

Cartel enforcers.

Men serving life without parole.

Even murderers avoided provoking them.

The table belonged to one man.

Marcus Kane.

Six feet six.

Over three hundred pounds.

His bald head was covered with old scars.

Black tattoos climbed from his wrists to his neck like vines.

Rumor claimed he had started three prison riots and ended more than twenty lives before his arrest.

Whether true or not...

No one questioned him.

Not even guards.

The next morning, the warden personally stopped Viktor before lunch.

"You've got a new assigned seat," Briggs said with fake kindness.

Viktor quietly looked up.

"Where?"

The warden pointed toward Table Seven.

Several guards exchanged nervous glances.

One nearly opened his mouth to protest.

Instead, he looked away.

Briggs leaned closer.

"You'll eat there."

"For one week."

"If you survive."

The cafeteria buzzed with whispers before lunch even began.

"They're sending Grandpa to Marcus."

"He'll never come back."

"They'll break him before dessert."

Some inmates couldn't even watch.

Others rushed to grab seats with a better view.

It felt less like lunch...

And more like an execution.

When the doors opened, Viktor calmly picked up his metal tray.

Soup.

Bread.

Mashed potatoes.

One boiled egg.

Nothing unusual.

Without hesitation...

He walked straight toward Table Seven.

Conversation throughout the cafeteria slowly died.

Hundreds of eyes followed every step.

Marcus looked up first.

The giant criminal smiled.

Not kindly.

Like a wolf spotting an injured deer.

"You lost, old man?"

No answer.

Viktor gently placed his tray on the table.

Pulled out a chair.

Sat down.

Started eating.

Silence.

Then laughter exploded around the table.

One inmate reached over and stole Viktor's bread.

Another grabbed his drink.

A third flicked mashed potatoes onto Viktor's prison shirt.

Still...

The old man continued eating what little remained.

No anger.

No fear.

No complaint.

Marcus watched him carefully.

That calmness bothered him.

Most prisoners begged.

Cried.

Apologized.

Viktor simply chewed his food as though nothing unusual was happening.

By the third day, the humiliation became worse.

His spoon disappeared.

His chair was kicked away.

Someone dumped cold water over his shoulders.

Another inmate whispered graphic threats directly into his ear.

Viktor never reacted.

His silence became more frightening than any insult.

Even Marcus began wondering...

Who exactly was this old man?

On the seventh day, the warden decided the game needed a dramatic ending.

He entered the cafeteria just before lunch and stood against the wall, folding his arms with satisfaction.

Every guard understood what he wanted.

Every inmate sensed something terrible was about to happen.

Marcus slowly stood as Viktor quietly ate his meal.

Without warning...

The gang leader slammed both hands onto the tray.

Metal crashed against concrete.

Hot soup splashed across the floor.

Bread rolled beneath nearby tables.

The cafeteria became completely silent.

Marcus stepped closer until his shadow covered Viktor.

"You've been pretending to be brave all week."

"Now..."

"Show everyone what happens when someone disrespects my table."

For the first time...

The elderly inmate slowly stood.

His knees cracked softly.

He looked down at the spilled food.

Then...

He raised his eyes toward Marcus.

What happened in the next ten seconds would permanently change the balance of power inside Blackstone Prison...

May you like

...and expose a truth that neither the warden nor the most dangerous criminals had ever imagined.
