“Wait! Khalid, please! We can renegotiate!” Trevor cried out, grabbing frantically at the table. “We can offer better terms! Fifty percent equity!”
“You can offer nothing,” Khalid replied coldly, turning his back on them.
He walked over to where I stood, pulling a sleek gold-plated business card case from his inner jacket pocket. He extracted a heavy, embossed black card with gold lettering and handed it to me with a respectful nod.
“Maya,” Khalid said, his tone entirely transformed, carrying the warmth of a true ally. “My investment fund in Dubai has been looking for a Chief Compliance Officer with your specific backbone and analytical brilliance. My private jet leaves JFK tomorrow morning. Your starting salary will be triple what these men stole from you.”
I looked down at the card: Tariq-Al-Rashid Global Holdings — Chief Financial Investigator.

“Thank you, Your Excellency,” I said. “I accept. But before I leave tomorrow, I have one more stop to make.”
