Chapter 7 - THE ALLIANCE IN THE SHADOWSThey took refuge in an abandoned railway depot three miles away from the Gilded Spoon—a cavernous, freezing brick shell where old steam engines once rested. The only warmth came from a small barrel fire Richard had hastily built using broken wooden pallets and an old can of lighter fluid he found in a maintenance locker.

Lily lay wrapped in Richard’s expensive cashmere overcoat, shivering heavily, her breathing shallow. Michael sat beside her, holding her small, icy hand.

Richard knelt by the fire, wiping soot and blood from his forehead. He pulled the micro-SD card from his pocket, turning the tiny sliver of plastic over in his palm.

"Who are they, Dad?" Michael asked quietly, his eyes wide in the flickering orange light. "Why did they try to hurt us?"

"Because your grandfather built his entire financial empire on a foundation of stolen graves," a gravelly voice echoed from the dark shadows near the back of the depot.

Richard instantly stood, pulling Michael behind him and reaching into his jacket for a heavy steel wrench he had picked up in the back rooms.

From the darkness stepped an old woman leaning heavily on a carved oak cane. Her face was weathered by decades of hardship, her hair silver-white and pulled back into a tight bun. But her eyes—sharp, intelligent, and unyielding—left no room for doubt.

"Rose," Richard breathed, the name catching in his throat.

The old woman stopped at the edge of the firelight. She looked at Richard, taking in his torn suit, the blood on his temple, and finally, the two children sitting by the fire. A bitter, sad smile touched her lips.

"You look just like your father, Richard," Rose said, her voice raspy but steady. "Cold, arrogant, and entirely too late to save the people who loved you."

"Where is Helen?" Richard demanded, stepping forward, his voice cracking with desperation. "Is she alive? What did my father do to her fifteen years ago?"

Rose let out a harsh, humorless laugh. "Your father didn't just banish Helen, Richard. He locked her away in a private psychiatric facility in Zurich under a false name when she refused to sign over her inheritance. And when I tried to smuggle her out three years ago... they made sure she never spoke another word again."

Lily whimpered softly in her sleep, pulling the cashmere coat tighter around her shoulders.

Rose walked slowly toward the little girl, her expression softening into profound tenderness. "That child isn't just your niece, Richard. She is the legal heir to the entire Morgan Holdings conglomerate. And the men who chased you tonight? They work directly for Marcus Vance."

Richard froze, the blood draining completely from his face. "Marcus... my own general counsel?"

"He never stopped working for your father's old business partners," Rose said quietly, pulling a heavy manila envelope from beneath her wool shawl and handing it to Richard. "The micro-card has the financial wire receipts, the medical records, and the confession. But we can't run anymore, Richard. If we don't strike back tonight, none of us will see the sunrise."
