Chapter 3 - The Surgical ExtractionInside the surgical suite, the hum of the heart monitor was the only sound cutting through the tension. Dr. Marcus Vance wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead under the glaring surgical lights. The procedure had been grueling. The bullet had lodged deep beneath the shoulder blade, fusing slightly with the bone due to months of unheeded inflammation and scar tissue.

"Forceps," Marcus muttered to his head surgical nurse, Clara.

Clara slapped the cold steel instrument into his gloved hand. Marcus maneuvered carefully, his fingers steady despite the mounting dread in his stomach. The dog’s respiration rate dipped slightly, the automated monitor emitting a soft, cautionary beep.

"He's stabilizing, but we're losing blood pressure," Clara warned, checking the intravenous drip. "Doctor, we need to move faster."

"I have it," Marcus gritted his teeth, nudging the tip of the forceps against the jagged metal fragment. With a sharp, metallic clink, the bullet slid free from the dense muscle tissue.

Marcus let out a long breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. He dropped the blood-stained lead slug into a stainless steel basin. It clattered loudly against the metal.

"Get the sutures ready," Marcus said.

Suddenly, the heavy clinic doors burst open with a deafening crash.

Marcus spun around, his heart leaping into his throat. Two men in tactical black gear, their faces hidden behind reinforced ballistic masks, stepped into the room. They weren't wearing police insignias. They wore the silent, terrifying uniform of professional executioners.

Clara screamed, dropping a tray of instruments.

"Step away from the table," the lead intruder ordered, leveling a silenced submachine gun directly at Marcus’s chest.

Marcus raised his hands, shaking violently. "Look, take whatever you want—the drugs, the cash in the register, just don't—"

"We don't want the drugs, Doctor," the man interrupted, his voice muffled by the mask. "We want the package on the table. Mr. Rossi sends his regards."

The second operative stepped forward, pulling a heavy-duty nylon restraint from his tactical vest, walking straight toward the operating table where the sedated mastiff lay completely defenseless.

Marcus watched in horror, realizing that Alio Valente’s warning hadn't arrived in time. But as the intruder reached out a gloved hand to grab the dog’s collar, the heart monitor beside the table suddenly shifted.

The flat, steady rhythm spiked.

The mastiff’s massive eyes snapped wide open. There was no grogginess from the anesthesia, no confusion from the pain. There was only pure, unadulterated lightning.

Before the gunman could blink, the 170-pound beast erupted from the table like a launched missile, shattering the IV pole and sinking its massive jaws straight into the forearm of the lead operative with a sound like cracking timber.
