Chapter 5 - Blood and BlueprintsThe sun was just beginning to break over the Chicago skyline, casting long, bruised shadows across the city. Inside the reinforced basement of the Valente estate, the atmosphere was thick with cigar smoke and palpable danger.

Alio Valente sat at the head of a massive mahogany table. Spread out before him were high-resolution satellite maps, financial spreadsheets, and the blood-stained lead bullet Dr. Vance had surgically removed just hours earlier.

Standing around the table were Tommy Keen and three of Alio’s most trusted captains: Luca "The Hammer" Moretti, Sal "The Ghost" Vitale, and Marcus Vance, who had his arm bandaged from the chaos at the clinic.

"Rossi is back," Alio said, his voice dangerously calm as he rolled the lead bullet between his fingers. "For five years, we thought he died in that warehouse explosion on the West Side. We thought his organization crumbled after the federal sweeps. We were wrong."

Sal Vitale pushed a stack of intercepted financial documents across the table. "He’s been rebuilding under an alias, Alio. Buying up abandoned dockyards, laundering money through shell corporations in the Cayman Islands. And he’s been quietly arming a new crew."

"And the dog?" Luca asked, crossing his massive arms over his chest. "How does a stray from the streets tie into a ghost like Vincent Rossi?"

Alio looked up, his dark eyes locking onto the center of the table. "The dog isn't a stray, Luca. It’s a message. Rossi knew I went to Solace every Friday night at midnight. He knew I sat alone. He sent that animal to my feet knowing it would break my focus—or worse, that it would bring us into his crosshairs."

"If it was a trap, why did his own men attack the clinic last night?" Marcus interjected, his voice still shaking slightly. "Those men weren't trying to rescue the dog, Mr. Valente. They were trying to kill it. They wanted it dead before I pulled that bullet out."

Alio’s eyes narrowed. He stood up slowly, walking over to a side table where a heavy leather collar recovered from the clinic was laid out. He picked it up, running his thumb along the inner lining. There was a small, embossed serial number pressed into the aged leather.

"Because," Alio whispered, "the bullet inside that dog wasn't just lead. It was a tracker. And more than that... look at the inner lining of this collar."

Alio pulled a small pocket knife from his trousers and carefully sliced open the seam of the leather. A tiny, micro-SD card fell out, landing softly on the mahogany wood.

The room went dead silent.

Tommy leaned forward, squinting at the micro-chip. "What is that?"

"That," Alio said, a cold, dangerous smile slowly spreading across his face, "is every single financial ledger, shipping manifest, and federal informant list belonging to Vincent Rossi’s entire syndicate. The dog didn't just crawl to my feet for safety, boys."

Alio looked toward the closed door of the estate's private kennel upstairs, where the mastiff was currently resting under heavy guard.

"The dog stole it from him."
