Chapter 6 - The Secret in the CodeBack at the estate, the atmosphere was vastly different. Ethan sat cross-legged on the plush carpet of the library, building an intricate Lego skyscraper while a private tutor helped him with math.

When Andrew walked in, the boy looked up, his wide eyes full of an unspoken question.

"Is the bad man gone?" Ethan asked quietly.

Andrew walked over, knelt beside the Lego tower, and placed a small, warm hand on the boy's dark hair. "He’s gone, Ethan. He will never, ever be able to hurt you or anyone else again."

Ethan let out a long, shuddering breath, resting his head against Andrew’s shoulder. For the first time since the rain-soaked sidewalk, the rigid tension in the boy's small body completely melted away.

Later that evening, after Ethan had fallen fast asleep in the guest suite upstairs, Andrew sat alone in his private laboratory in the basement of the estate. The room was dark, illuminated only by the blue glow of holographic terminals.

Marcus appeared on the primary screen via secure video link.

"Chief, we've secured all physical and digital files from Sterling’s secondary vault. But there's something strange about the encryption algorithm attached to Ethan’s biological profile. It’s not just a standard neural-link key."

"What is it?" Andrew asked, leaning closer to the glass screen.

"It’s a genetic lock," Marcus explained, typing code onto his end. "Dr. Julian Vance didn't just design a technology to cure neurological disorders. He built a fail-safe system designed to interface directly with human consciousness—specifically, his son’s DNA. Sterling was trying to force Ethan to unlock it surgically. But the code requires a direct biometric sync with someone the boy fully trusts."

Andrew stared at his own hands, then looked up toward the ceiling, realizing the terrifying weight of what had just happened. Ethan hadn't just run into a stranger's arms by accident on that rainy Chicago sidewalk. The boy’s instincts had somehow recognized something in Andrew—perhaps the deep, burning grief of a man who had lost his own family, or perhaps destiny itself.

"Bring the decryption terminal up here," Andrew commanded quietly. "Let's see what Dr. Vance left behind."
