Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the MachineThe holographic terminal hummed to life, projecting a three-dimensional lattice of shimmering blue DNA strands into the center of the dark laboratory.

"Place the optical scanner on the desk, Chief," Marcus instructed from the remote feed. "We need a baseline scan of Ethan’s hand, but to bypass the final security layer, the system requires a secondary guardian override."

Andrew walked upstairs to Ethan’s room. The boy was sleeping peacefully, clutching a small stuffed bear Mrs. Gable had bought him. Gently, so as not to wake him, Andrew pressed Ethan’s thumb against a small portable biometric pad. The pad blinked green.

Carrying the scanner carefully, Andrew returned to the lab, locked the device into the main terminal, and initiated the final sequence.

“Biometric match confirmed,” a synthesized, robotic voice echoed through the lab. “User verification: Ethan Vance. Secondary Guardian Override: Andrew Whitman.”

The holographic lattice shifted violently, spinning into a massive, complex structural schematic of a neural prosthesis—and right beside it, a personal video file labeled: TO WHOEVER FINDS MY SON.

Andrew’s breath caught in his throat. With a trembling finger, he pressed play.

The projection flickered, resolving into the tired, brilliant face of Dr. Julian Vance. The background showed a chaotic, smoke-filled laboratory—evidently recorded the night of the fatal fire.

"If you are watching this, it means I didn't make it out, and Ethan is alone," Julian said, his voice strained and coughing slightly from the smoke. "Sterling knows what I built. He wants to weaponize the neural-link to control human behavior on a mass scale. I couldn't let him have it. I encrypted the core source code directly into Ethan's cellular makeup using a safe retrovirus, protected by a trust-based neural lock."

Julian looked directly out of the screen, right into Andrew’s eyes, as if looking across time and space.

"Whoever you are—if you protected my boy, if you gave him shelter when the world turned its back—you are the only one who can unlock the true legacy. Use it to heal, Andrew. Not to destroy. Take care of my son."

The video cut to black.

For a long moment, the laboratory was dead silent. Andrew stood frozen, staring at the empty space where Julian's face had just been. The grief of losing his own wife and daughter flared up, mixing with a sudden, overwhelming wave of purpose. He wasn't just a billionaire protecting a runaway child anymore. He was a father again.
