Chapter 1 - The Shockwave in Silk and DiamondsThe sound of the slap lingered in the high-ceilinged grand ballroom, a dry, cracking percussion that silenced the champagne chatter of Manhattan's elite. Vivienne Ashford stood with her hand still raised, her manicured fingers curved in a cruel hook of triumph. A collective intake of breath swept through the room like a cold draft, rustling designer silk and glittering diamonds.

Ella Marsh did not fall. Though her cheek burned bright crimson, stained with the dark, dripping tracks of vintage red wine, she kept her spine straight. Her grandmother's voice echoed in the chambers of her memory: Keep your head high.
"Clumsy little rat," Vivienne sneered, her voice carrying across the polished mahogany floor. She turned to the circle of socialites, flashing a manufactured, glittering smile. "Honestly, Dominic, you really must supervise the agency you hire your staff from. They let anyone in off the streets nowadays."
Before Dominic Vance could step forward from the edge of the room, a movement caught the eye of the crowd.
It was Margaret Vance.
The frail woman in the faded floral dress, usually invisible in the background of her son’s opulent world, stepped past the string quartet. Her posture, usually soft with age, had gone rigidly, terrifyingly straight. Her eyes—a piercing, pale blue that Dominic had inherited—fixed entirely on Vivienne.
"Margaret, darling," Vivienne trilled, her smile faltering slightly under that glacial gaze. "You should be resting. The noise must be terribly exhausting for your old—"
Slap.
The sound was heavier, sharper, echoing off the crystal chandeliers with the authority of a judge's gavel.
Vivienne staggered back, a hand flying to her cheek where a stark, red welt instantly bloomed. The room plunged into a suffocating, absolute vacuum of sound. No one breathed. No one dared blink.
"You," Margaret said, her voice not raised, yet vibrating with a terrifying, ancient power that commanded the entire estate, "do not touch the people in my home."

Vivienne’s face twisted from shock into a mask of venomous fury. "You—you demented old hag! Dominic! Are you going to stand there and let this senile parasite strike your future wife?"
All eyes shifted to the master of the house. Dominic Vance stepped forward from the shadows of the arched doorway. His face was a mask of cold granite, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Vivienne, and for the first time that evening, the room truly trembled.
