Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the LedgerThe atmosphere in the conservatory shifted instantly. The playful banter evaporated, replaced by the heavy, suffocating tension of high-stakes corporate warfare.

Dominic took the USB drive from Julian’s hand, his fingers brushing against his brother's. Without a word, he pulled a sleek, high-end laptop from the side table, plugged in the drive, and began scrolling through lines of encrypted financial data, code, and offshore routing numbers.

Margaret leaned in closer, her brow furrowing with concern. "What is it, boys?"

"It’s not just Vivienne and the Sterling Group," Julian said, his voice dropping low, losing all its playful cadence. "Vivienne wasn't the mastermind. She was a middlewoman. A very ambitious, very greedy pawn."

Ella watched Dominic's face as he read through the files. The billionaire's expression hardened into something terrifying. The veins in his temples throbbed slightly, and his knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the laptop.

"The Vanguard Syndicate," Dominic muttered, the name slipping through his clenched teeth like a curse.

Julian nodded grimly. "Bingo. They've been quietly buying up debt tied to Vance Industries through third-party shell companies for over a year. Vivienne was feeding them insider data so they could time a hostile takeover right after the wedding. Once she married into the family, she was supposed to poison mother—just like Ella overheard—and take over the primary voting shares."

Ella felt a cold shriek of horror crawl up her spine. She had thought she was just stopping a petty, jealous socialite from stealing a company. She had accidentally stumbled into the crosshairs of an international corporate syndicate.

"They think they can take my family's legacy?" Dominic looked up from the screen, his dark eyes burning with a cold, absolute fury that promised total annihilation. "They've just declared war on the wrong man."

"They're meeting tonight," Julian added, leaning forward. "At the private penthouse suite of the Grand Manhattan Hotel. A closed-door summit of the Syndicate's top board members. They think we're still scrambling to pick up the pieces from Vivienne's arrest."

Dominic closed the laptop with a sharp snap that echoed in the quiet room. He stood up, towering over the table, his presence commanding absolute authority.

"We are going," Dominic stated flatly.

"We?" Julian raised an eyebrow. "It's a private club, Dom. You can't just kick down the door with a security detail without tipping them off."

Dominic turned his gaze away from his brother and looked directly at Ella.

Ella’s breath hitched. She slowly stood up from her chair, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Me?" she whispered.
