Chapter 4 - REUNION IN THE SHADOWSAn hour after my mother was hauled away in a federal transport vehicle, the private dining hall was empty save for Marcus Vance, who was currently trembling in a corner while federal agents combed through his laptop and briefcase. I didn’t care about Marcus; he was a minor player, a lapdog who would gladly flip on every associate to shave a few years off his inevitable prison sentence.

I slipped out through the service elevator, bypassing the reporters gathering in the hotel lobby, and made my way back up to the penthouse suite.

When I unlocked the door and stepped inside, the atmosphere was entirely different from the sterile corporate world I had just left. The room was softly lit by a single floor lamp. Catherine was sitting on the sofa, cradling little Penelope, who was awake now, cooing softly and playing with a silver button on her mother’s collar.

Catherine looked up as I entered. The tension in her shoulders didn't instantly vanish, but the terror that had consumed her eyes earlier was gone, replaced by a profound, trembling relief.

“Is it done?” she whispered.

I walked across the room, kneeling beside the sofa, and gently reached out to stroke Penelope’s soft, dark hair. The baby blinked up at me with large, innocent eyes that mirrored Catherine’s.

“It’s done,” I said, my voice thick with emotion I no longer needed to hide. “Daria is in federal custody. Her accounts are frozen, her corporate assets are being seized by the board, and Dr. Weston has confessed to everything. No one will ever hurt you or Penelope again.”

Catherine let out a long, shuddering breath, a single tear spilling over her lashes and tracing down her cheek—not a tear of grief, but of pure, unadulterated liberation. She leaned forward, resting her forehead against mine, our breath mingling in the quiet warmth of the room.

“I was so scared, Samuel,” she murmured against my skin. “Every day in that isolated estate, looking out at the woods, wondering if you had forgotten me, wondering if you believed I was really gone.”

“I never stopped looking, Catherine,” I whispered fiercely, wrapping my arms around both of them, pulling them tightly against my chest. “Even when the world told me you were dead, my soul knew better. We are finally safe.”

For a long time, we stayed like that—a family reunited after two years in the abyss, holding onto each other in the quiet sanctuary of the night, unaware that a final, desperate ghost from Daria’s empire was still watching from the dark.
