Chapter 8 - The Scar That Remains

Six months later, the Lakefront Mercy Hospital emergency bay was as loud, chaotic, and antiseptically smelling as it had always been.

At 2:14 in the morning, the automatic doors slid open, and a man in a charcoal suit walked in with a minor laceration on his palm—a stupid kitchen accident involving a bottle of expensive scotch and a stubborn cork.

Dr. Harlan turned pale, frantically reaching for his clipboard.

“Mr. Russo—do you need security? Should we call—?”

“Shut up, Harlan,” a cool, authoritative voice rang out from the nurses' station.

Clara Hayes walked out from behind the counter. She wasn't wearing scrubs anymore; she was the newly appointed Director of Trauma Administration, wearing a crisp white coat over her clothes and carrying a sleek silver tablet.

She looked at the minor scratch on Dominic’s palm, then looked up into his dark, amused eyes.

“You walked into a glass table over a bottle of scotch?” Clara crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. “Dominic, you run half the legitimate infrastructure in the Midwest, but you still can't open a bottle without a hazard to public safety?”

“It was a commemorative bottle,” Dominic defended smoothly, stepping closer until the rest of the trauma bay seemed to fade away. “And I needed an excuse to see the head administrator.”

The nurses around them giggled quietly, turning back to their charts with knowing grins.

Clara sighed, shaking her head, though a bright, undeniable smile broke across her face. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a clean antiseptic wipe, and grabbed his large, scarred hand.

“Sit down,” she commanded softly.

Dominic sat on the edge of the trauma bed, exactly where he had sat six months ago when a bleeding stranger first walked into her life and changed her world forever.

He didn't flinch as she cleaned the cut. He didn't look away from her face.

Chicago learned a long time ago that Dominic Russo was a man made of iron, blood, and shadows. But as he looked at the woman stitching his hand with steady, gentle precision, the city’s most feared king knew the absolute truth:

He would gladly let his entire empire burn to ashes just to keep her by his side.
