Chapter 18 - Vows in the Courtyard

The soft strains of the jazz quartet faded into a gentle hum as the neighborhood officiant—a retired municipal judge who had known Walter Brooks for forty years—smiled warmly at the couple standing before him.

“We gather tonight,” the judge began, his voice carrying clearly across the flower-filled courtyard, “not to celebrate power or fortune, but to celebrate proof. Proof that memory survives destruction. Proof that love can rebuild what corruption tried to break.”

He turned to Luca. “Luca Moretti, do you take Elena Brooks to be your lawful wife, to stand by her through every storm, to protect her legacy as your own, and to share every canvas of your life?”

Luca didn't look away from Elena’s eyes for a single second. The cold, calculating shadows of his past were entirely gone, replaced by an absolute, unshakeable clarity.

“I do,” Luca said, his voice ringing with deep, resonant conviction.

The judge turned to Elena. “Elena Brooks, do you take Luca Moretti to be your lawful husband, to cherish his fierce heart, to build a home where no one is ever forgotten, and to walk beside him into every tomorrow?”

Elena smiled, her heart overflowing with a profound sense of peace and fierce affection.

“I do,” she answered clearly.

Luca slid a platinum band set with brilliant diamonds and deep blue sapphires onto her finger, while Elena matched it with a sturdy, elegant platinum band that symbolized strength and endurance.

“By the power vested in me,” the judge smiled broadly, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. Luca, you may kiss your bride.”

Luca didn't hesitate. He pulled Elena into his arms and kissed her—not with the desperate urgency of a man running from ghosts, but with the deep, enduring passion of a man who had finally found his home.

The courtyard erupted into cheers, applause, and a shower of white rose petals thrown by Mrs. Henderson and the front-row guests.

As the music swelled back into a lively jazz melody, Luca kept his arm securely around Elena’s waist, whispering against her lips, “Welcome to forever, my artist.”

“I’d expect nothing less from my favorite commissioner,” Elena laughed, leaning her head happily against his shoulder as the celebration of a lifetime truly began.
