Chapter 2 - THE BREAKING POINT IN APARTMENT 3-B

The plastic cordless phone shattered against the kitchen linoleum as Derek Patterson ripped it from Chloe’s hand, crushing the device under his heavy boot.

“You little rat!” Derek roared, his face flushing a violent, mottled crimson. He lunged forward, grabbing Chloe by the upper arm and yanking her away from the refrigerator so hard that little Tyler lost his grip, sliding down the makeshift dish towel sling with a sharp, terrified wail.

“Don’t!” Chloe screamed, ignoring the tearing pain in her shoulder as she scrambled on the floor to scoop her baby brother back into her arms.

Derek raised a heavy hand, his fingers curling into a fist, ready to teach the girl a lesson she would never forget for defying him. But before his blow could land, a sound echoed from the building’s main entrance downstairs—a sound that didn't belong in the decaying Cedar Street tenements.

It was the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat-ready boots storming up the concrete stairwell, followed by the metallic clatter of professional tactical gear.

Derek froze, his hand suspended in mid-air. “What the hell...?”

Before he could turn toward the doorway, the apartment's flimsy wooden door exploded inward, splintering into a hundred flying shards of wood as it was forced off its hinges by a coordinated kinetic breach.

Three heavily armed private security operatives clad in matte-black tactical armor poured into the cramped kitchen, their weapons raised with terrifying precision.

“Down on the ground! Do it now!” the lead operative commanded, his voice cutting through the room like a razor.

Derek staggered backward, his eyes wide with blind panic as he threw his hands into the air. “Who are you people? This is a private residence! I’m her guardian—!”

He didn't finish the sentence.

Stepping through the ruined doorway behind the security detail came a tall, imposing figure in a custom charcoal Italian-wool suit. His silver-streaked hair was slightly disheveled from the frantic drive, his tailored coat soaked from the rain, but his eyes—flashing with a lethal, absolute fury—scanned the chaotic kitchen and immediately locked onto Chloe and the crying baby in her arms.

It was James McKenzie.
