Chapter 2 - THE BLOODLINE TEST

The text from Richard Carter blinked on the screen like a countdown detonator.

Do not involve yourself with Rebecca Morgan. Walk away now.

James locked his phone with a thumb that trembled slightly—not from fear, but from a cold, blinding fury that had been lying dormant for five years. His father didn't ask questions. He gave orders. Which meant Richard Carter had never lost track of Rebecca Morgan at all.

Dr. Thomas cleared his throat, looking between James and the tiny hand clutching James’s fingers.

"Mr. Carter, are you staying?"

"I’m not going anywhere," James said, his voice dropping into that low, dangerous register that usually made board members check their exits. "Get the best surgical team in New York into that OR. If you need equipment, specialists, or a dedicated blood bank, charge it directly to Carter Enterprises. If she dies, every board member on your foundation committee will be looking for a new job by nightfall."

The doctor swallowed hard and nodded, turning on his heel.

Lily tugged at James’s trousers. "Where is Mommy going?"

"She’s going to see some doctors who are going to fix her up, Lily," James said, kneeling so he was eye-level with the child who carried his face. "And you and I are going to sit right here. Do you trust me?"

Lily studied him for a long moment, her bright green eyes—his eyes—searching his features. Then she gave a solemn nod. "Mr. Bear says you have kind eyes. Just like Mommy's when she's happy."

Within twenty minutes, hospital security approached with a social worker holding a clipboard.

"Mr. Carter? We need to talk about the child's temporary custody. Without a marriage certificate or official documentation proving paternity—"

"Get me the head of pediatric legal affairs," James interrupted, pulling out his second phone. "Put her on speaker."

He didn't wait for permission. He dialed a private number. "Marcus. I’m at New York General. I need an expedited, court-ordered DNA swab processed within the hour. No, bypass the queue. Use my private lab. And find out who authorized the dispatch on Rebecca Morgan’s hit-and-run tonight."

The social worker blinked, recognizing the name, the power, and the terrifying calm in the billionaire's voice. "Sir, we still have protocol—"

"Protocol can wait in the hallway," James said coldly. "The child stays with me. If anyone tries to move her, they answer to my legal team."

He scooped Lily into his arms. She buried her face in his shoulder, smelling faintly of sunshine, spilled juice, and dried tears. As he held her, a chilling realization settled into his bones: five years ago, Richard Carter had told him Rebecca took a payoff and fled to Europe with another man.

A lie. A carefully constructed, vicious lie.
