Chapter 14 - The Gathering Storm

Two weeks after Clare’s sudden appearance in the bakery, the atmosphere across the county began to shift in ways that even the seasoned riders couldn't ignore.

It started with a series of quiet phone calls.

Bear sat in the corner booth of the clubhouse late on a Thursday night, the amber glow of the single brass desk lamp cutting sharp shadows across his weathered face. Spread out before him were three separate printed reports from contacts in the local sheriff's department and county records office.

Knox leaned against the pool table behind him, cleaning a hunting knife with an oiled cloth, her eyes fixed on the door.

"She didn't just walk in here on a whim two weeks ago," Knox said, her voice low and even. "People like Clare don't drive forty miles out of their way just to apologize. She was sent."

"Sent by who?" Tiny asked from across the room, where he was rebuilding a carburetor by the light of a drop-lamp.

"A lawyer," Bear said, sliding the third report toward the center of the table. "A guy out of Billings named Henderson. Corporate defense. High-retainer type who usually handles property disputes and estate liquidations for timber conglomerates."

Tiny stopped wrenching, his massive eyebrows drawing together. "What's an estate lawyer out of Billings care about an eight-year-old kid and a bankrupt truck driver?"

"Not the kid," Bear said grimly. "The property."

He tapped a legal land survey attached to the report. It showed the blueprint of the old Walker house on the edge of town—and more importantly, the three acres of undeveloped timberland directly behind it, land that Rachel Walker had inherited from her grandfather before she died. Land that Arthur Walker had quietly tried to sign over to a commercial development firm just before he disappeared.

Except there was a catch.

According to Rachel Walker's original will—a document that had been buried in a safety deposit box which Arthur never opened—the land didn't belong to Arthur, and it certainly didn't belong to Clare.

And as of eight months ago, the legal guardian of record for Emma Walker was a man named James "Bear" Caldwell.
