Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence

The heavy mahogany doors of Bellisimo closed behind Julian Morty, sealing out the hum of Chicago traffic, but the silence inside the restaurant felt heavier than any street noise. Julian looked down at his sleeping son, Leo, resting securely against Sarah Bennett’s worn cleaning uniform. The baby’s chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm that Julian hadn't heard in weeks.

"You're Sarah," Julian stated, not as a question, but as a fact retrieved from the background check running instantly through his head. His men didn't miss a beat; a digital dossier on Sarah Bennett was already being compiled on their secure devices. "You work three part-time jobs. Your ex-husband, Gary, is taking you to court for sole custody of your seven-year-old daughter, Lily. Tomorrow is your next filing deadline, and you can’t afford the retainer."

Sarah froze, the warmth of the baby in her arms turning to ice. Her breath caught in her throat. She took a step back, clutching Leo closer. "How... how do you know that?"

"I know everything that happens in this city, Sarah," Julian replied, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that commanded absolute submission. Yet, his eyes remained locked on his sleeping son. "Especially about people who walk up to armed men without a shred of fear just to soothe a crying infant."

Julian signaled to his chief of security, a towering man named Marcus, who stepped forward holding an expensive leather briefcase. Julian gently took Leo back into his arms, ensuring the baby didn't wake, before turning his gaze back to Sarah.

"You saved my evening," Julian said, his expression unreadable. "And more importantly, you brought peace to my son when the best pediatricians and nurses in Chicago failed. In my world, debts are never forgotten. Come with me inside. We need to talk about your custody battle."
