Chapter 20 - The Horizon

An hour later, the steps of the Yellowstone County Courthouse looked like a celebration.

As Emma stepped out through the heavy double doors, holding Bear's massive, scarred hand in one small grip and clutching her sketchbook in the other, a cheer went up from one hundred and seventy riders that could be heard three blocks away.

Tiny hoisted her up effortlessly onto his massive shoulder, right beneath the shadow of a towering Harley, while Knox handed her a brand-new, fifty-pack box of Crayola crayons wrapped in a bright red ribbon.

Down at the edge of the parking lot, standing near her battered sedan, Clare watched them. She didn't try to approach. She didn't yell. She simply watched as the little girl who had once sat shivering in the gravel on Highway 12 laughed out loud, surrounded by a wall of leather, chrome, and absolute, unbreakable loyalty.

"Where to now, boss?" Tiny asked, looking down at Bear as the engines began to rumble to life one by one, creating a tectonic symphony of sound that shook the pavement.

Bear looked at Emma, who was busy tucking a bright yellow crayon behind her ear while grinning down at the crowd.

"Home," Bear said, his ice-blue eyes crinkling at the corners as a rare, genuine smile broke through his beard. "We're going home."

And with a roar that tore through the Montana sky, two hundred bikes surged forward into the golden afternoon sunlight, leaving the past behind them on the empty road where it belonged.
