Chapter 19 - The Architect of Lies

"Get them out of there! Now!" Dr. Harrison roared to the tactical team.

The federal agents used heavy hydraulic cutters to pry open the jammed blast door, pulling Sarah and me out of the vault just as the secondary smoke cleared. Medical personnel immediately swarmed Sarah, placing an oxygen mask over her face and stabilizing her vital signs.

Dr. Harrison walked up to me, holstering his weapon, his face lined with profound exhaustion.

"I thought you were in Marcus's pocket," I said, breathing heavily as I supported Sarah’s hand.

"I was working deep undercover for Federal Internal Affairs, Mr. Miller," Dr. Harrison revealed quietly. "Marcus and your brother had compromised half the state judiciary. We had to make Marcus believe he was in total control so he would expose his entire offshore network. Sarah knew the plan... she agreed to play the victim to bring your brother and Marcus down once and for all."

I looked down at Sarah. She removed her oxygen mask weakly, looking up at me with profound, heartbreaking guilt.

"I couldn't tell you, Charles," she whispered, tears slipping down her cheeks. "If you acted differently, if you showed any sign of knowing the truth, Frank would have executed you immediately. I had to let you believe I was a terrified ex-wife running from a secret."

"And Maya?" I asked softly, the final piece of the puzzle hanging in the air between us. "The DNA test?"

Dr. Harrison smiled gently, pulling a sealed white envelope from his inner jacket pocket and handing it to me.

"The state lab results Frank showed you were falsified by his contacts to drive a wedge between you and Sarah," Harrison said. "This is the real, un-tampered DNA report from the Federal Forensic Institute."

I opened the envelope with trembling fingers.
