Chapter 5 - The Surgical Strike

Marcus Kane walked into the foyer like a man inspecting an estate he had already purchased. His dark tactical coat was dusted with fresh snow, and his breath plumed in the freezing air rushing through the shattered front doors.

"You know, Nathan, I always admired your discipline," Marcus said, his voice echoing off the vaulted wooden ceilings. He didn't look at the wounded operative bleeding on the floor; his eyes were fixed entirely on Nathan, who stood ten paces away with his pistol raised. "You cut into human flesh every day, removing diseased tissue, stitching up what’s broken, believing you’re playing God with a scalpel. But you never realized that society works the exact same way. Some things just need to be excised."

"You murdered my sister, and now you think you can walk out of here with those children?" Nathan’s voice was a low, dangerous growl. His finger hovered over the trigger, his heart hammering against his ribs like a caged bird. "Step one more inch forward, Marcus, and I'll perform a procedure you won't survive."

Marcus stopped. A slow, condescending smile spread across his face. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a sleek silver remote, and pressed a single button.

A soft beep echoed from the back hallway.

Nathan’s breath caught in his throat.

On the wall-mounted monitor behind Marcus, the thermal feed of the safe room flickered. The heavy steel bulkhead door—the one Rosa and the children were locked behind—suddenly hissed as high-pressure thermal charges ignited along its hinges.

"Rosa!" Nathan screamed, turning instinctively toward the hallway.

It was the split-second distraction Marcus had been waiting for.

With explosive speed, Marcus lunged forward, closing the distance between them like a striking viper. He struck the underside of Nathan’s wrist with the heel of his palm, sending the Sig Sauer spinning away across the polished wood floor.

Before Nathan could recover, Marcus drove a hard, devastating elbow straight into Nathan’s solar plexus.

Air exploded from Nathan’s lungs. He staggered backward, his knees buckling as the world tilted violently. He hit the floor hard, coughing violently, gasping for oxygen as white spots danced across his vision.

Marcus stood over him, adjusting his cuffs with unnerving calm.

"You were always too emotional, Nathan," Marcus said, looking down at him with mild pity. "That’s why Sarah left you. That’s why you lost everything seven years ago. You care too much about people who don't matter."

Marcus turned and walked past him down the hallway toward the safe room, where the smoke was clearing to reveal twisted, smoking steel hinges.

Nathan pushed himself up onto his hands and knees, his chest burning with every agonizing breath. His eyes scanned the floor. Ten feet away, half-hidden beneath the edge of the console table, lay his pistol.

He didn't think. He dragged his battered body forward, his fingers clawing across the smooth wood until his palm closed around the cold steel grip.

Down the hall, Marcus kicked the smoking bulkhead door open.

"Come out, Rosa," Marcus called out smoothly, stepping into the dark vault. "The game is over."

Nathan gritted his teeth, hoisted himself up against the wall, raised the pistol with both shaking hands, and leveled the sights directly at Marcus’s back.
