Chapter 1 - THE BLOOD ON THE WAX SEALThe red wax seal bearing the intersecting geometric lines of the Reyes Syndicate didn’t just crumble when Elise broken it; it flaked off like dry scabs. Inside the thick parchment was her father’s distinctive, elegant handwriting—a script she hadn't seen since the rainy afternoon four years ago when two NYPD detectives stood at her door to tell her Marcus Caldwell had been killed in a hit-and-run.

My dearest Elise,

If you are reading this, it means my time expired before I could clear my conscience. For thirty years, I was not merely an archivist for the New York Historical Society. I was the Vault Keeper for the Seven Families of the Manhattan Trust. Beneath the city lies a ledger containing every judge bought, every senator bribed, and every blood debt owed by the underworld.

I divided the key into two parts. One belongs to the Reyes family bloodline. The other is encoded into the crest ring hanging around your neck. Do not trust the men in gray suits. Do not trust the Commission. Mateo Reyes is a lethal man, but he is the only shield between you and the wolves who want to tear you apart.

Forgive me, my sweet girl. Papa.

Elise’s breath hitched in her throat. Her fingers drifted to her collarbone, clutching the thin platinum chain hidden beneath the bodice of her evening dress. Hanging from it was her father’s worn silver signet ring—a piece of jewelry she had assumed was a cheap heirloom.

"He gave it to you," Mateo said softly. His voice was a quiet baritone that seemed to vibrate through the wood-paneled walls of the private study on the top floor of the Manhattan Penthouse.

Elise looked up, her dark eyes flashing with sudden rage. "You knew. You knew my father was working for your family!"

"I knew Marcus Caldwell was the only honest man in a city built on corrupt money," Mateo corrected coldly, stepping closer. The faint scent of cedarwood, leather, and expensive rain-washed tobacco trailed off his tailored tux. "The man in the gray suit at the gala was Viktor Volkov—head of the Russian Syndicate trying to seize control of the East Coast docks. He found out yesterday that Marcus had a daughter. He was planning to kidnap you tonight to force the ledger out of hiding."

"So that kiss..." Elise’s cheeks burned at the memory—the firm press of his warm lips, the blinding flashbulbs of two hundred elite paparazzi, the utter humiliation of being treated like a trophy. "You didn't do it to protect me! You did it to stake a claim!"

"I did it to declare war," Mateo growled, his gaze locking onto hers with terrifying intensity. "In our world, taking a Don's claimed woman means immediate execution by the High Council. By kissing you, I made you untouchable to Volkov—for three hours. But now those three hours are up."

BOOM!

A deafening explosion blew the heavy double glass balcony doors inward!

Shards of glass and thick black smoke rained into the study.

"Down!" Mateo bellowed.

Before Elise could process the sound, Mateo slammed his body against hers, tackling her onto the plush Persian rug and pinning her securely beneath his broad frame. A hail of automatic gunfire chewed through the wooden bookshelves above them, shredding hundreds of leather-bound volumes into confetti.

"Boss! They breached the perimeter!" Marco, Mateo’s security chief, yelled through the open doorway, firing a silenced submachine gun back into the burning hallway. "Volkov brought thirty men! They cut the main power lines!"

Mateo didn't panic. He pulled a sleek, matte-black Sig Sauer from his shoulder holster, racked the slide, and dragged Elise to her feet by her wrist.

"You wanted an explanation, Ms. Caldwell," Mateo hissed into her ear, his hazel eyes burning with a dark, primal thrill as bullets chipped the marble mantle beside them. "This is it. You're coming with me, or you die in this room."
