Chapter 5 - THE CONFESSION IN THE DARKBy 4:00 AM, they were tucked away inside an underground safehouse hidden beneath an abandoned brownstone in Brooklyn Heights.

The safehouse was warm, lined with exposed brick, illuminated by the soft orange glow of an oil lamp.

Elise sat on an leather sofa, wearing an oversized grey cashmere sweater belonging to Mateo. It draped past her knees, smelling faintly of his expensive cologne.

Mateo sat across from her at a wooden table, stripped to his undershirt, cleaning a deep wound on his shoulder with rubbing alcohol. His broad chest was covered in dark, intricate tattoos—a map of his family's history, scars, and sins.

Elise stood up, taking the gauze and medical tape from his hands. "Sit still. You're making it bleed worse."

Mateo watched her quietly as she knelt beside his chair, her soft fingers gently cleaning the cut near his collarbone.

"You should hate me," Mateo murmured softly.

"I do," Elise whispered, her hands trembling slightly as she applied the bandage. "You dragged me out of my normal life. You made me a target for the mob. You kissed me like I was your property in front of two hundred people."

"I did it because it was the only way to keep you alive," Mateo said, reaching out to capture her wrist. His touch was warm, surprisingly gentle for a man whose hands were built for violence. "And because I’ve been watching you for three years, Elise."

Elise froze, her breath catching in her throat. "What?"

"Three years ago, at the Metropolitan Gala," Mateo confessed, his hazel eyes locking onto hers with intoxicating intensity. "You were coordinating the catering staff. A senator’s son tried to corner you in the pantry. You didn't cry. You didn't panic. You spilled a hot pot of coffee over his shoes and walked out with your head held high."

A faint blush crept up Elise’s cheeks. "You saw that?"

"I fell in love with you that night," Mateo stated simply, without an ounce of hesitation or shame. "But I knew what my world was. I knew that bringing you into my life meant putting a target on your back. So I stayed in the shadows. I watched over you from a distance. Until your father's ledger forced my hand."

Elise looked down at the black ledger resting on the table.

"Open it," Mateo said gently. "Page 142."

Elise stepped over to the table, her hands shaking as she flipped through the yellowed, blood-stained pages of the ledger.

When she reached page 142, her heart stopped.

At the bottom of the page was an execution order dated four years ago:

TARGET: MARCUS CALDWELL. STATUS: TERMINATED. ORDERED BY: DON ANTONIO REYES.

Elise stumbled back, her eyes wide with horror as tears welled up.

"Your father..." Elise gasped, her voice breaking. "Your father ordered my dad's murder!"

Mateo didn't move. He sat in his chair, looking at her with an unbearable, agonizing sorrow.

"Yes," Mateo whispered. "My father killed yours because Marcus refused to hand over the keys to the Manhattan Trust."

"And you brought me here?!" Elise screamed, tears streaming down her face. "You kissed me?! You touched me?! When your family has my father's blood on their hands?!"

"My father ordered the hit," Mateo said, standing up slowly, his voice shaking with raw emotion. "And twelve hours after I found out what he did... I put a pillow over Don Antonio’s face while he lay in his hospital bed."

Elise gasped, pressing her hands to her mouth.

"I killed my own father to avenge yours, Elise," Mateo revealed, stepping toward her, his soul laid completely bare. "I took his crown so I could burn his legacy to the ground."
