Chapter 7 - The Final Reckoning

The Federal District Courtroom was packed to absolute capacity, the air thick with tension and the low, collective murmurs of high-profile journalists, federal prosecutors, and national security officials.
In the defendant's box sat Michael, Diane, and Brandon, their faces pale, gaunt, and hollowed out from weeks of intensive confinement in high-security detention blocks. Gone were the designer suits, the luxury watches, and the arrogant, sneering smirks. They wore standard orange jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles shackled together with heavy steel chains that clinked miserably every time they shifted in their seats.
In the second row, sitting upright in an executive wheelchair with a warm, steady smile on his face, sat my grandfather, Arthur Vance. He looked healthier, stronger, and more vibrant than he had in years, surrounded by a detail of federal protection officers who stood at rigid attention behind him.
I sat at the primary prosecution table, my dark federal service uniform crisp, unblemished, and adorned with the insignia of a senior director.
The heavy oak doors at the front of the courtroom swung open, and the bailiff’s voice boomed through the chamber.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Marcus Vance presiding!"
Judge Vance—a respected federal jurist and distant cousin who had maintained strict professional distance throughout the entire investigation—stepped up to the bench, adjusting his black robes before taking his seat.
"Be seated," the judge commanded, his deep, resonant voice echoing through the silent room.
He looked down at the case files spread across his mahogany desk, his expression stern and unreadable. "We are here for the final sentencing phase in the matter of United States v. Michael Vance, Diane Vance, Brandon Vance, and Viktor Petrov on multiple counts of high treason, economic espionage, elder abuse, conspiracy, and attempted sale of classified national security infrastructure."
Diane buried her face in her handcuffed hands, letting out a muffled, pathetic wail that echoed softly through the courtroom. Michael stared straight ahead at the varnished wood of the defense table, his jaw clenched so tight his facial muscles twitched uncontrollably.
Judge Vance adjusted his reading glasses and scanned the final sentencing recommendations submitted by my office.
"The court has reviewed the complete evidentiary record, including the recovered digital payloads, audio-visual surveillance logs from the defendants' residence, and the victim testimony provided by Professor Arthur Vance," the judge stated, his voice ringing with absolute authority.
He paused, looking directly down at Michael and Diane.
"The gravity of the crimes committed here extends far beyond ordinary criminal behavior. You attempted to sell out the very defensive architecture that protects millions of citizens, and you did so while inflicting calculated, malicious cruelty upon an elderly man who spent his entire life providing for you."
Michael squeezed his eyes shut, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dirt and exhaustion on his cheek.
"For the charges of conspiracy to commit high treason and economic espionage," Judge Vance continued, reading from the official parchment, "this court sentences Michael Vance to thirty-five years in a federal maximum-security penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Diane Vance is sentenced to thirty years under identical terms."
Brandon let out a sudden, high-pitched gasp, sliding down out of his chair until the heavy chains around his ankles pulled him up short against the floorboards. "No! No, please! I didn't know! I was just following orders! Mom, tell them!" he shrieked, thrashing wildly until two federal marshals grabbed him by the shoulders and hauled him back onto his bench.
"Brandon Vance," Judge Vance’s voice cut through his hysterics like a knife, "for your direct participation in the illegal data transfer and collaboration with an international intelligence syndicate, you are sentenced to twenty-five years in a federal correctional facility."

The judge finally looked up, fixing his gaze upon Viktor Petrov, who sat with cold, unrepentant defiance at the adjacent defense table. "And for Viktor Petrov, acting as an agent of a foreign hostile entity, this court imposes a sentence of life imprisonment without parole."
Judge Vance struck his gavel down once. The sharp, cracking sound echoed through the courtroom like a gunshot, signaling the definitive end of an era of betrayal, greed, and darkness.
