Chapter 3 - The Billionaire’s Sanctuary

The executive penthouse on the fiftieth floor of Northstar Tower was less of an office and more of a fortress designed by an architect with an appreciation for minimalist luxury. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of Chicago’s skyline, currently bruised by slate-gray storm clouds rolling in from Lake Michigan.

Nathan set my cardboard box down on a mahogany side table near a plush leather couch.

“I am so sorry,” he said, running a hand through his dark hair, looking more frustrated than I had ever seen him. “I should have moved faster. I knew Vanguard was ruthless, but I didn't think they’d stoop to leaking your personal life to punish me.”

I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to stop the shivering that had nothing to do with the office air conditioning.

“They made me a joke, Nathan,” I whispered, looking out at the distant horizon. “Everyone down there knows. Everyone heard. The one thing I kept hidden—the one part of myself I protected because I was terrified of being judged—is now public property.”

Nathan closed the distance between us in two long strides. He didn't touch me immediately; he gave me space, letting me feel the anchor of his presence.

“Listen to me,” he said, his voice steady and fierce. “There is nothing about you that is a joke. What they exposed wasn't a weakness—it was a standard. You want something real. You want a heart before a body. In a world full of people willing to sell their souls for a stock option, wanting emotional honesty is the rarest, most courageous thing I have ever encountered.”

I looked up, tears finally spilling over my lashes. “It hurts, though. It feels like my dignity was stripped away.”

“Then we take it back,” Nathan said, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, brilliant determination. “Vanguard thinks they can break us by exposing our private lives? Tomorrow morning, the board of directors is holding an emergency meeting to vote me out as CEO. They think without me at the helm, Northstar will collapse, and they can pick the bones clean.”

“An emergency meeting?” I gasped. “Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was trying to handle it alone,” he admitted, offering a self-deprecating smile. “The exact same flaw you accused me of having. I thought being a billionaire CEO meant I had to carry every burden by myself. But watching you stand your ground down there... I realized I don't want to do this alone anymore.”

He stepped closer, closing the final inch between us. His thumb gently wiped a tear from my cheek. The contact sent a jolt straight to my core, warm and electric.

“They want a war?” Nathan murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to my eyes. “Let’s give them one. But we do it together. Starting tonight, you stay here. In this penthouse. Under my roof, and under my protection.”

My heart hammered against my ribs—not from fear, but from the sudden, overwhelming realization that the untouchable billionaire wasn't just protecting an employee.

He was protecting me.

And as the first flash of lightning illuminated the Chicago skyline, I realized I didn't want to run anymore.
