Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Promise

That evening didn't end in the boardroom.

Instead of going back to my cramped apartment—which now felt tainted by the digital harassment campaign—Nathan brought me back up to his penthouse sanctuary.

He didn't order high-end catering or summon an army of chefs. Instead, he ordered takeout from a local Italian place downtown, and we sat cross-legged on his plush living room rug, eating garlic bread straight from the cardboard box while Chicago’s night lights glittered outside the massive glass windows.

It was domestic, imperfect, and completely wonderful.

“So,” Nathan said, taking a sip of sparkling water and looking at me sideways with a playful glint in his eye. “Chief Financial Analyst. Does that mean I have to start calling you ‘Boss’ in the office?”

I laughed, tossing a crust of bread at him, which he easily caught. “Only if you want me to audit your personal expense reports, Mr. Carter. I hear you spend an unreasonable amount on artisanal coffee.”

“That is slander,” he protested, grinning in a way that made him look ten years younger than his magazine covers suggested. “That coffee fuels the entire tech sector.”

As the laughter faded, a gentle, charged quiet settled between us.

Nathan set his plate down on the coffee table and turned fully toward me, pulling his knees up. The playful light in his eyes shifted into something deeper, more vulnerable.

“Maya,” he said softly, his voice losing its playful edge.

“Yeah?”

“When you confessed to Harper in the cafeteria that day... you said you were waiting for someone who wanted your heart before your body. Someone who made you feel safe.” He reached out, his warm fingertips gently tracing the jawline of my cheek. “I know the world has been loud lately. I know your privacy was violated in the worst possible way.”

My breath hitched. “Nathan...”

“I just want to make sure you know something,” he continued, his gaze holding mine with absolute, unwavering sincerity. “There is no timeline you have to follow. There are no expectations you have to meet. Every single piece of you—your heart, your mind, your history—is safe with me. I’m not going anywhere.”

Tears pricked my eyes, but they were tears of profound relief. For twenty-eight years, I had carried the heavy burden of feeling like an outsider in a world obsessed with fast intimacy and superficial connections. I had guarded my heart like a fortress, terrified that no one would ever understand why I wanted something deeper.

And now, sitting in a penthouse overlooking the Chicago skyline, the most powerful man in the city was telling me that my patience wasn't a flaw—it was what he had been searching for all along.

“Thank you,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.

“Don't thank me yet,” Nathan murmured, leaning in close until his lips hovered just millimeters from mine. “We still have a lifetime of slow mornings to figure out.”
