Chapter 7 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the corporate landscape of Chicago looked very different.

Vanguard Holdings had collapsed under the weight of federal indictments, insider trading charges, and class-action shareholder lawsuits. Arthur Vance was awaiting trial in a federal penitentiary, a fallen giant whose greed had finally caught up with him.

Northstar Technologies, under Nathan’s steady leadership and my new financial restructuring policies, was thriving more than ever. We had transitioned into a company culture that prioritized sustainable innovation, employee mental health, and absolute transparency.

And in my personal life, the whispers and internet trolls were nothing more than a distant, faded memory.

On a crisp, clear Friday evening in late spring, Nathan and I walked hand-in-hand along the exact stretch of the Chicago River where he had almost lost me to a corporate phone call months ago.

The city lights danced across the water, painting golden ripples against the dark surface.

I was wearing a simple navy blue dress, the evening breeze catching the ends of my hair. Nathan stopped walking, turned to face me, and reached into the inner pocket of his tailored jacket.

My heart did a familiar, thrilling flip.

He didn't pull out a corporate contract, a smartphone, or a legal dossier.

Instead, he pulled out a small, velvet-covered box.

“Nathan...” I breathed, my voice catching in my throat.

“When I first heard you in that cafeteria, I thought it was just a coincidence of architecture,” Nathan said, dropping gently to one knee right there on the cobblestone walkway, ignoring the passing pedestrians who glanced over with wide, recognizing eyes. “I didn't realize it was the moment my life actually began.”

He opened the box. Resting against the black velvet was a diamond ring, elegant and understated, catching the amber glow of the city lights.

“You taught me that true strength isn't about guarding yourself against the world,” he whispered, looking up at me with raw, unfiltered adoration. “You taught me how to love, how to listen, and how to choose what truly matters. Maya Bennett... will you give me your heart first, and let me spend the rest of my life earning it?”

The Chicago wind whispered around us, carrying the distant sounds of traffic and laughter, but in that moment, the entire universe shrank down to the light in his eyes and the warmth of his hand.

I didn't hesitate. I didn't overanalyze. I didn't panic.

“Yes,” I whispered, tears spilling over my lashes as I smiled down at him. “Yes, a million times yes.”
