The 1967 Mustang, however, was legally returned to its rightful owner—me, as Daniel Mercer’s legal heir.

On a bright Saturday morning, I stood in the driveway of our small apartment above the laundromat. The morning sun caught the immaculate black polish of the Mustang, gleaming like new.

My mother stood on the front steps, wearing a soft, proud smile, wiping a single tear from her cheek with the corner of her apron.

I opened the driver’s side door, slid into the vintage leather seat, and pressed the secondary ignition switch my father had built with his own hands.

The V8 engine roared to life with a clean, powerful, unbroken growl.
