Chapter 8 - The Sunrise After the StormSix months later.

The morning sun broke over the peaks of the Rocky Mountains, casting a golden, warm glow across the snow-capped cliffs in the distance.

I stood on the balcony of a beautiful, peaceful estate overlooking the valley. The wind was crisp, but for the first time in my life, I didn’t feel cold.

The news on my phone was filled with headlines:

CARTER ENTERPRISES CEO SENTENCED TO LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER AND FRAUD

FIFTY MILLION DOLLAR INSURANCE CONSPICUITY FOILED BY SURVIVING WIFE

Michael Carter would spend the rest of his natural life behind bars in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, stripped of every cent, every asset, and every shred of dignity. Ashley had taken a plea deal, agreeing to ten years in prison for her complicity.

A warm pair of arms gently laid a soft blanket over my shoulders.

“You’re standing out in the cold again, Emma,” Gabriel said softly, joining me at the balcony railing.

“I’m not cold anymore, Gabriel,” I smiled, looking up at my uncle. “Not anymore.”

From inside the house, the happy, bubbling laughter of a baby echoed through the open glass doors.

I turned around and walked into the sunlit nursery. Sitting in a wooden crib, playing with a plush toy lion, was Leo. His dark eyes sparkled with life, completely oblivious to the dark storm that had surrounded his birth.

I lifted him into my arms, pressing a soft kiss to his warm forehead.

Michael thought he could erase us on that icy cliff for fifty million dollars. He thought greed was the strongest force on earth.

He was wrong.

Greed is fragile. It crumbles under pressure. But a mother’s love? A mother’s promise to protect her child?

It can survive the coldest blizzard, climb out of the deepest canyon, and tear down any monster in its path.

I held my son tight against my chest as the morning sun filled the room with light.

We had survived the ice. And now, our real life was finally beginning.
