Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM WARThe emergency board meeting was set for 2:00 PM at the Sterling Enterprises headquarters on Wall Street.

By 1:00 PM, I had moved Marianne and Eli into a secure, high-rise penthouse owned personally by Marcus—a building completely off the grid and protected by armed security personnel. I had also arranged for a world-renowned pediatric cardiologist from Johns Hopkins to fly in on my private jet to evaluate Eli immediately.

When I walked into the board room on the 50th floor, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

The twelve members of the board—men and women in bespoke suits who controlled billions in asset capital—were seated around the massive oval marble table. At the head of the table sat Victoria, looking immaculate in a royal blue suit, her expression cool and triumphant. Sitting to her right was Arthur Vance, my late wife’s father, looking smug.

"Julian," Victoria said smooth as silk, gesturing toward the empty chair at the foot of the table. "How nice of you to join us. We were just discussing your recent... erratic behavior."

I didn't sit down. I threw my briefcase onto the center of the table with a loud, metallic thud that echoed off the glass walls overlooking Manhattan.

"Let’s skip the theatrics, Victoria," I said, looking around the room. "You called this meeting to vote me out as CEO under the guise of mental incompetence."

"It's not a guise, Julian," Arthur Vance chimed in, leaning forward. "You’ve been harassing low-income citizens, using corporate security for personal disputes, and neglecting your duty to finalize our merger with Vance Group. As chairman of the ethics committee, I second Victoria’s motion for your immediate removal."

"Is that so, Arthur?" I smiled, reaching into my pocket and pulling out a flash drive. I tossed it onto the glass table, sliding it straight to the head of the IT department who was managing the room's display screen. "Plug that in."

Victoria’s eyes narrowed. "Julian, this meeting is governed by strict protocol—"

"Plug it in!" I commanded, my voice booming across the room.

The IT technician nervously grabbed the drive and plugged it into the main terminal.

The giant 85-inch display on the wall flickered to life. Instead of corporate financial charts, a series of offshore bank records, tax evasion documents, and shell company registries filled the screen.

The board members began whispering frantically to one another, leaning in to read the numbers.

"What is this nonsense?" Arthur spat, his face turning red.

"That," I said, pointing at the screen, "is a detailed record of forty-two illegal wire transfers totaling $180 million, executed over the past six years. Transfers originating from Sterling Enterprises' primary development reserve, moved through dummy corporations in the Cayman Islands, and deposited directly into accounts owned jointly by Victoria Sterling and Arthur Vance."

Victoria didn't lose her composure, but her knuckles turned white against her pen. "These are fabricated documents. A desperate attempt by a failing executive to deflect—"

"Look at the signatures on page twelve, members of the board," I interrupted, stepping closer to the display screen. "Those are my forged signatures. Forged using an automated digital signature protocol authorized exclusively by Victoria Sterling's master clearance key."

A sharp gasp echoed across the boardroom.

"Furthermore," I continued, pacing along the length of the table, "Arthur Vance's late daughter, Claire, was aware of these transactions. When she tried to confront her father six years ago, she mysteriously cut all ties with her family and fell into a deep depression before her sudden illness. I have reason to believe that her death was not entirely natural."

"YOU LIE!" Arthur roared, slamming his fists on the table as he stood up. "How dare you speak of my daughter!"

"I have the medical examiner’s report right here, Arthur," I said, pulling a set of papers from my coat and sliding them across to the nearest board member. "Her autopsy report was altered. She was administered toxic doses of digitalis over a period of three months—the exact same chemical compound found in medication that Victoria had imported from overseas."

The room burst into utter chaos. Board members stood up, shouting over one another, pointing fingers at Victoria and Arthur.

Victoria stood up slowly, her terrifying calmness dropping like a lead weight over the room. She looked at me, not with motherly love or regret, but with pure, unadulterated venom.

"You think this saves you, Julian?" she said softly, her voice carrying over the noise. "You think destroying me saves that dirty little boy on Maple Row?"

"Eli is already at Saint Jude’s Hospital," I replied, a cold smile touching my lips. "The cardiac team is preparing him for surgery as we speak. Funded entirely by my personal accounts—accounts you cannot touch."

Victoria sneered. "Then check your phone, my dear son."

My heart sank. I slowly pulled my phone from my pocket. A notification was flashing red on the screen.
