Chapter 6 - The Tower of GlassThe spiral metal staircase felt like an endless, suffocating iron spine spiraling up into the belly of the beast.

Clara’s boots pounded against the rungs as she climbed, her lungs heaving against the tight seal of the tactical respirator. Every second felt like an eternity. Below her, the muffled sounds of the tactical team using thermite charges to cut through Leo’s door echoed like distant thunder. BOOM!

Just hold on, baby. Mommy is coming, she chanted in her head, wiping the condensation off her visor.

She reached the top of the stairs and kicked open a heavy glass door, stepping directly into Richard’s private penthouse suite.

The room was breathtaking—and utterly surreal. It was a massive, circular glass observatory perched at the very peak of the island tower. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic, 360-degree view of the raging ocean storm outside, illuminated by brilliant flashes of lightning.

Standing in the center of the room, looking out over the stormy sea with a glass of scotch in his hand, was Richard. He wasn't wearing a jacket anymore; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up, revealing expensive gold cufflinks.

"I knew you'd make it," Richard said calmly without turning around. "You always were stubborn, Clara. Even in college, when everyone else gave up, you just kept fighting."

Clara raised her pistol, her hands locked in a steady, lethal grip, pointing the barrel straight between Richard's shoulder blades.

"Drop the glass, Richard. Turn around slowly, and put your hands behind your head. Or I swear to God I will put a bullet through your spine right now."

Richard let out a quiet, mocking chuckle. He slowly turned around, setting his crystal glass down on a glass-topped designer coffee table. He didn't look scared at all. In fact, he looked amused.

"You won't shoot, Clara," Richard smiled, taking a slow step toward her. "You're a mother, not a killer. Besides... if I die right now, you’ll never find the digital decryption key to unlock Leo's cell door."

Clara’s finger tightened against the trigger. "Try me."

"Oh, I wouldn't do that if I were you," Richard purred, stepping aside and gesturing toward a large wall-mounted monitor behind him.

The monitor flickered to life, showing a live CCTV feed of the underground holding room.

Clara gasped in horror.

The thermite charge had blown the door off its hinges, but the room was completely flooded with thick, glowing purple gas. Reynolds and his tactical team were lying motionless on the floor, their respirators flashing red. Inside the cell, little Leo was curled up on the couch, completely unconscious, his chest barely moving.

"You... you monster!" Clara shrieked, lunging forward with a blind fury.

She slammed the butt of her pistol against Richard’s face, catching him square on the jaw. Richard stumbled backward, crashing against the glass coffee table and shattering it into a thousand glittering pieces, a trickle of blood splitting his lip.

"Where is the key?!" Clara roared, straddling his chest and pressing the barrel of her gun directly against his forehead. "Give me the damn key or I swear I'll end you right here!"

Richard wiped the blood from his lip, looked up into her furious eyes, and started to laugh—a low, manic laugh that drowned out the thunder outside.

"You think the key is physical, Clara?" Richard wheezed, a wicked gleam in his eye. "The decryption code is set on a forty-eight-hour automated dead-man's switch tied to my heartbeat. If my heart stops beating... the bunker door seals permanently, and the air vents pump in enough carbon monoxide to put your son to sleep forever."

Clara froze, the blood draining from her face. Her pistol lowered a fraction of an inch.

"You... you rigged your own life to his?"

"Checkmate, my dear," Richard whispered, a triumphant grin spreading across his bloodied face. "You want your son back? You're going to have to make a choice. Save me, or watch him die."
