Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Snow

Caleb fired. The gunshot exploded through the ravine, the bullet striking the beast squarely in the shoulder. It bellowed—a horrific, human-like scream of rage—and stumbled, but it didn't fall.
Before Caleb could chamber another round, the creature swiped its massive paw, knocking the rifle cleanly out of his hands. The force of the blow threw Caleb backward against the rock face, knocking the wind from his lungs.
The Hook: He closed his eyes, waiting for the fatal bite. Instead, he heard the tearing of flesh—but it wasn't his.
A blur of gray and brown fur launched itself from the top of the ridge. It was the mother bobcat.
She didn't hesitate. With a feral screech, she landed squarely on the monster’s back, her claws digging deep into its neck, biting down furiously. The giant beast roared, spinning in circles, trying to shake her off. The young kitten joined the fray, biting at the creature’s hind legs.
"Get off her!" Caleb roared, pulling his hunting knife. He drove the blade into the monster’s flank.
The beast thrashed, throwing the mother bobcat against the stones and kicking Caleb away. Bleeding heavily from its neck and side, the monster realized it was outnumbered. It let out one final, chilling shriek, turned, and bounded into the thick fog of the ravine, disappearing as quickly as it had arrived.
Caleb scrambled over to the mother bobcat. She was breathing heavily, a deep gash running down her shoulder. She looked at him, her golden eyes filled with an eerie, profound intelligence.
"We need to get out of here," Caleb muttered, ripping his flannel shirt to bind her wound.
As he helped her up, he noticed something dropped by the beast during the struggle. Half-buried in the dirt was a heavy, silver ranger badge, bent and covered in old, dried blood.

Caleb picked it up and wiped away the mud. The name engraved on the back made his heart stop: Ranger Silas Vance - 2012.
But Silas was currently working the station. Who—or what—had he been talking to the night before?
