Chapter 4 - The Ranger's Secret

Caleb ran all the way back to the cabin, the mother bobcat and her kitten limping close behind him. He barricaded the door, his mind racing. He held the bloody badge up to the light. 2012. Silas had told him he only joined the force three years ago.

Suddenly, heavy boots thudded onto the porch steps.

Caleb grabbed his backup shotgun, aiming it squarely at the door. "Who's there?!"

"Caleb, open up! It's Silas!"

Caleb unlocked the deadbolt but kept the shotgun leveled at Silas's chest as he stepped inside. Silas looked exhausted, his clothes torn, carrying a heavy duffel bag. He stopped dead when he saw the shotgun, then looked down at the bobcats resting by the hearth.

The Hook: "Put the gun down, Caleb," Silas said softly. "Before you shoot the only person who can keep you alive."

"Explain this," Caleb growled, tossing the silver badge at Silas’s feet.

Silas looked down at the badge, and a heavy, sorrowful sigh escaped his lips. He closed the door behind him and locked it. "I told you forty years ago the state banned those traps. What I didn't tell you is why. My father was the head ranger here in 2012. That was his badge."

Silas sat down heavily at the wooden table. "There's an old strain of rabies—a mutated, aggressive parasite—that breeds in the deep caves of the Blackwood Ravine. It doesn't just make animals mad; it mutates them. Breeds hyper-aggression, massive growth, and a hunger for human flesh. The locals call them the 'Grave-Walkers.' My father tried to wipe them out. He failed. One of them killed him and took that badge with his body."

"The thing I fought today... it had this badge," Caleb said, his voice trembling.

"Because it's hunting the things my father loved," Silas said, looking at the bobcats. "And now, it’s hunting you because you possess the one thing it fears: the scent of its prey's protector. But that's not the worst part, Caleb."

Silas opened his duffel bag, revealing rows of military-grade explosives. "The town council knows. They're sealing the ravine tonight with dynamite. They’re going to bury everything inside it alive—including those bobcats. And if you’re still here, they’ll bury you too."
