Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Empire of SandClara pulled up a chair, crossed her legs, and laid out three separate financial audits across my hospital lunch tray like a general inspecting battle maps.

“Let’s start with the good news,” Clara said, tapping a document with her gold pen. “The restraining order is fully active. Daniel and Vivian were both formally served at the police precinct this morning. The local sheriff escorted Vivian off your front porch at 7:00 AM after she tried to break a window with a garden gnome.”
I let out a genuine laugh, wincing slightly as my ribs protested. “A garden gnome? Really?”
“Oh, she was howling like a banshee,” Clara smirked. “Accusing the entire neighborhood of communist conspiracy. But that’s just the appetizer, Elena. Look at this.”
She slid a corporate expense report across the tray. The header bore the logo of Vanguard Financial Corp—Daniel’s employer.
“Remember how Daniel always told you that his high salary was tied up in ‘high-risk venture capital investments’ and that you couldn't touch the savings account because he was ‘building our future’?” Clara asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Every single day for three years,” I nodded.
“Well,” Clara said smoothly, “using my corporate contacts, I did a deep dive into his actual ledger. Daniel isn't an elite investor, Elena. He’s a mid-level analyst who has been embezzling minor discretionary funds from his department’s client-entertainment budget to fund his lavish lifestyle with his side piece, Jessica.”
My jaw dropped. “Embezzling?”
“To the tune of nearly eighty thousand dollars over the last fourteen months,” Clara confirmed, flipping to a second document filled with bank transfers and hotel receipts. “And guess whose name he used as a guarantor on several of his corporate credit lines when his personal credit tanked? Yours.”
The blood drained from my face. “Mine? How? He didn't have my signature!”
“He didn't need it,” Clara said grimly. “He used your old tax returns from when we filed jointly three years ago, forged your signature on a digital guarantor form, and listed your apartment—which he thought he owned—as collateral.”
She paused, letting the weight of her words sink into the sterile air of the hospital room.
“If you hadn't filed that exclusive, standalone property deed six months ago, Elena... Daniel’s corporate fraud would have triggered an automatic lien on your home. By the end of this month, the bank would have foreclosed on your apartment, seized everything you owned, and left you homeless while Daniel and his mother walked away clean.”
A cold shudder rolled down my spine. They hadn't just been exploiting me. They had been setting me up as the ultimate fall guy. If the corporate audit caught up to Daniel, I would have been the one facing federal fraud charges for backing his forged guarantees.
“He planned it,” I whispered, the horrifying realization dawning on me. “From the very beginning. The moment his mother moved in, they were executing a timeline to push me out, take the house, and ruin me financially.”
“Well,” Clara said, her eyes flashing with predatory delight as she slammed her briefcase shut, “the hunter just became the hunted. Because as of two hours ago, I personally handed this entire financial audit to the internal affairs and corporate compliance division at Vanguard, along with a copy of your domestic violence police report.”

Clara leaned in close, her voice dropping to a low, triumphant whisper.
“Daniel’s arraignment for domestic assault is at 2:00 PM. But his termination hearing for corporate embezzlement is happening right now. And honey? He doesn't even know it yet.”
