Chapter 2 - The Family Group Chat Explodes

At 7:30 a.m., the notification chime on my phone began a steady, frantic rhythm that didn’t stop.
Family Matters (14) had been resurrected from the digital graveyard.
My mother had dropped a screenshot first, followed by a string of frantic question marks. Marcus, it turned out, hadn’t slept. By 2:00 a.m., he had woken up his accountant, logged into commercial portals he hadn’t looked at in years, and discovered that the leverage he loved to brag about at Thanksgiving dinners had vanished into thin air years ago.
Marcus: This is a clerical error. [Name], call me right now. What is this fake document?
Aunt Sarah: What is going on? Marcus, why are you shouting at this hour?
Uncle David: Did someone get hacked? [Name], is everything okay with the loan?
I waited until I had poured my morning coffee, sat down at the table, and watched Daniel happily spread butter on a piece of toast. He looked rested, his little face free of the shadow from yesterday.
I picked up my phone and typed into the group chat:
"No hack, Uncle David. No clerical error, Marcus. I paid the loan off four years ago, right after our second major corporate contract cleared. I simply didn't feel the need to update a man who measures his love by how indebted he can keep people to him."
The chat went instantly, terrifyingly dead silent. Three minutes passed. No typing bubbles appeared.
Then, my father’s name popped up.
Dad: [Name], is this true?
Me: Ask your golden-boy son. He has access to his own records—if he bothers to check facts before he tries to humiliate a seven-year-old child over a hamburger.

That was the match dropped into the powder keg. Because while the family knew Marcus was loud, arrogant, and fond of lording his financial success over everyone, none of them had been at the grill yesterday. None of them knew why I had suddenly packed up Daniel and left in my rattling old car.
Until now.
