Chapter 4 - The Corporate Predator Unmasked

By 11:00 a.m., there was a heavy, frantic pounding on my apartment door.
I didn't rush. I finished washing Daniel's cereal bowl, wiped down the counter, and walked slowly to the door. Through the peephole, I saw Marcus. His hair was disheveled, his high-end golf shirt slightly wrinkled—a rare state of public imperfection for him. Behind him, standing near the stairwell, was his terrified-looking business partner, Richard.
I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open just wide enough to block the entrance.
"Open the door, [Name]," Marcus hissed, his face flushed red. "What kind of petty stunt are you pulling in the family chat? Do you have any idea what kind of panic you caused?"
"I told the truth, Marcus," I said, my voice completely level. "Something you seem to have an allergic reaction to."
"You humiliated me!" he barked, stepping forward. "You made it look like I was lying to the family—"
"You were lying to the family. For four years, you let everyone believe I was financially shackled to you just so you could play the big-hearted savior at every Sunday dinner." I leaned against the doorframe, letting a faint, cold smile touch my lips. "And then you took it out on a seven-year-old boy."
Richard, standing behind Marcus, suddenly paled and grabbed Marcus’s shoulder. "Marcus... shut up. Just... stop talking."
Marcus whipped around. "Shut up, Richard? This is family business—"
"It's not family business anymore," Richard whispered, staring past Marcus at me. He looked terrified. He knew something Marcus didn't.
