Chapter 6 - The Tables Turn

Marcus stared at the paper as if it were written in ancient Sumerian. His breath came in short, shallow gasps. The invincible patriarch, the self-made titan who had mocked a little boy for not having a "future," was suddenly staring at the absolute annihilation of everything he had built.

"No," Marcus whispered, shaking his head frantically. "No, that's impossible. You're... you live in this dump! You drive an old car! You're a single mother working out of a spare bedroom!"

"I chose this apartment," I said quietly, "because the rent is low, the neighborhood is safe, and it taught my son the value of humility before the world taught him cruelty. I drive an old car because it gets me from point A to point B without needing a monthly payment to stroke my ego."

I walked over to the desk and picked up a heavy corporate seal stamp—the kind used for official legal notarizations.

"You measured my worth by my square footage, Marcus. You thought silence meant weakness. You thought a quiet life meant a failed life." I looked him dead in the eye. "You made a very expensive mistake."

Richard, standing by the door, slowly slid down the wall until he was sitting on the floor, burying his face in his hands. He had known all along that the company was bleeding money; Marcus had just refused to listen.

"What... what do you want?" Marcus whispered, his voice cracking, the arrogance completely stripped away. He looked smaller, older, and profoundly defeated.

"Two things," I said, leaning against the counter.

"Name them. Anything."

"First, you are going to pick up your phone right now, open the family group chat, and post a full, unedited public apology to Daniel for what you said at the barbecue yesterday."

Marcus flinched as if he'd been slapped. "My... my family? In front of everyone?"

May you like

"In front of everyone," I echoed coldly. "Or I call the receivers in by 1:00 p.m. and lock the warehouse doors before your employees even get back from lunch. Your choice."

He swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively, and slowly pulled his shaking phone from his pocket.
