Chapter 2 - The Confession of a MonsterEvelyn’s knees buckled slightly, but she didn’t drop to the floor. Instead, a chilling transformation washed over her features. The desperate, panicked trembling vanished, replaced by a cold, hardened glare that mirrored the true malice hiding behind her wrinkles.

She let out a dry, humorless laugh.

“You think you’re so clever, don’t you, Vincent?” Evelyn sneered, crossing her arms over her chest. She no longer bothered to hide her disdain. “The great, untouchable Vincent Moretti. You built an empire by noticing threats, but you were too arrogant to look inside your own family tree.”

“Keep talking,” I said quietly, gesturing with two fingers. Within three seconds, the heavy footsteps of my head of security, Marcus, echoed outside the door. He stepped into the room flanked by two massive guards, locking the door behind them. Evelyn glanced at the guards, but she didn’t flinch.

“Go ahead, lock the door,” Evelyn spat. “It doesn’t change the fact that Isabella’s medical charts, her prescriptions, and her legal power of attorney have already been altered.”

Isabella gasped, clutching my arm tighter. “What… what are you talking about, Mom?”

“Shut up, you ungrateful little fool!” Evelyn snapped, glaring at her own daughter with pure venom. “After all the sacrifices I made for you? After I raised you alone? You think you deserve to live in a mansion like this while my life crumbles? No. This wealth was supposed to be ours.”

“Ours?” I stepped forward, towering over her. “Explain.”

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed into slits. “You think I acted alone? You think an old woman like me could orchestrate all of this without backing? The tonic I was giving her wasn't meant to kill her overnight, Vincent. It was a slow-acting neurotoxin. It mimics severe postpartum depression and organ failure. By the time the doctors realized what was happening, Isabella would have been declared legally incompetent.”

A sickening realization hit me like a physical blow. “And then?”

“And then,” Evelyn smiled triumphantly, “as her primary caregiver and next of kin, I would have assumed medical and financial proxy over her estate. Do you have any idea how many assets are tied up in Isabella’s name through her family trust? Millions, Vincent. Millions that rightfully belonged to me before you swept her off her feet and cut me out of the picture.”

“You planned to steal my wife’s life and frame her for her own mental collapse,” I said, each word falling like lead weights.

“I was securing my future,” Evelyn hissed back unapologetically. “And honestly? You made it far too easy. You were too busy playing corporate warlord to notice what was happening right under your nose.”

She thought she had won. She thought holding the moral high ground of being “Mom” would protect her from the consequences. She had severely underestimated the man she was dealing with.

I didn’t raise my voice. I didn’t lose my temper. I simply pulled out my phone, tapped the screen, and placed a call.

“Marcus,” I said coldly, looking straight into Evelyn’s suddenly widening eyes. “Bring in the guest of honor. Let’s see how long her accomplice keeps his mouth shut downstairs.”
