Chapter 8 - THE NEW HORIZONThe afternoon sun streamed through the large arched windows of the loft, painting the wooden floors in warm amber light.

Josephine Nadeir walked up the stairs a moment later, carrying a chilled bottle of sparkling cider and three crystal flutes. Her expression was bright, the look of a strategist who had successfully checkmated an entire board in a single move.

"Everything is signed, sealed, and legally ironclad," Josephine announced, setting the bottle down on the oak table with a satisfying clink. "The asset reallocation is complete. Callaway Holdings is officially a subsidiary of the Vance Educational and Community Trust."

Odette popped the cork, letting out a cheer that echoed through the high-ceilinged room. She poured the sparkling cider into the flutes, handing one to me and one to Josephine.

"To new beginnings," Odette toasted, raising her glass. "And to never, ever needing a man with a fancy coat to secure our future."

"To independence," Josephine added, clinking her glass against ours.

I looked down at Marlo, who had abandoned her wooden spoon and was now reaching up toward the glittering crystal flutes with an infectious giggle, her tiny fingers catching the afternoon light.

I knelt down, lifting her out of the high chair and holding her close against my chest—not with the trembling, uncertain grip of a frightened mother in a hospital room six months ago, but with the unshakeable strength of a woman who owned her world, her future, and her destiny.

"Remember this moment, baby girl," I whispered softly into her dark curls, watching the golden light flood across the room. "We built this. And nobody will ever take it away."
