Chapter 10 - The Final Boarding CallOne year to the day after my life imploded at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, I found myself standing in Terminal 2 once again.

This time, I wasn't hiding on a second-floor balcony.

I was walking calmly toward Gate 42, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy pantsuit, wearing heels that clicked like a metronome against the polished tile floor. Around my neck hung a gold pendant engraved with a single word: Clarity.

I was traveling to Washington, D.C., to deliver a keynote speech at a national symposium on corporate fraud ethics and domestic financial transparency—an invitation I never would have received had my entire world not burned to the ground twelve months prior.

As I approached Gate 42, a familiar voice crackled over the airport loudspeaker.

"Now boarding Flight 412 to Cabo San Lucas..."

I paused, turning my head slightly toward the departure gate. The memories flickered briefly behind my eyes—the matching luggage, the rehearsed lies, the cruel smiles of a family that believed they had erased me.

I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel pain.

I only felt a quiet, powerful surge of triumph.

As I walked past the gate agent, my phone buzzed with a quick notification from Marcus Vance.

“Federal sentencing hearing for D. Bennett scheduled for 2:00 PM today. Maximum exposure: 8 years.”

I smiled, slipped the phone back into my designer handbag—right past the boarding pass for First Class—and walked down the jet bridge without looking back.

Daniel had taught me that people can hide behind uniforms, titles, and elaborate lies for years. But he had also taught me the most valuable lesson of all:

Never underestimate a woman who has nothing left to lose, and everything left to build.
