Chapter 6 - The UltimatumThe living room was dead silent except for the grandfather clock ticking heavily in the corner.

Marcus Vance stood quietly by the French doors leading to the back patio, serving as both legal counsel and silent witness. Daniel, Richard, and Lauren sat on the cream-colored sofa—the very sofa I had spent weeks picking out to match the living room’s minimalist aesthetic—now looking like defeated refugees in their own stolen kingdom.
"Here are the terms," I said, standing near the fireplace, holding a single sheet of paper containing a binding separation and asset-freezing agreement.
Daniel looked up, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. "Terms? Rachel, we can talk about a normal divorce settlement—"
"This isn't a normal divorce, Daniel," I cut him off, my voice slicing through the air like a scalpel. "This is a restitution agreement."
I walked over and dropped the paper onto the glass coffee table right in front of Richard.
"First," I said, ticking the points off on my fingers. "Daniel will sign an immediate, uncontested relinquishment of sole custody rights, granting me primary physical and legal custody of Leo and Maya, with supervised visitation only after psychological evaluation."
Daniel gasped, clutching his chest as if he’d been physically struck. "No! You can't take my kids! That's—that's cruel!"
"Cruel is teaching our children to lie to me while you sneak another woman into hotel rooms," I snapped back, my eyes flashing with sudden, intense fire. "You don't get to weaponize parenthood after treating your family like props in a sitcom."
Richard snatched the paper off the table, his eyes scanning the legal jargon. As he read further, his face turned from red to an alarming shade of pale gray.
"You... you want us to sign over our shares in the shell company?" Richard choked out, looking up at me in absolute horror. "You want us to forfeit our entire retirement portfolio?"
"Every single cent that can be traced back to Apex Pharmaceuticals kickbacks, corporate fraud, and illicit prescribing incentives," I replied smoothly. "You return the stolen funds to the hospital trust and the federal compliance office, or Marcus forwards his complete investigative dossier to the United States Attorney's Office by 3:00 PM today. You have two hours to choose between bankruptcy and a federal prison cell."
Lauren broke down, burying her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. "Dad... sign it. Just sign it. She has everything. She has us dead to rights."
Richard looked at his son, then at me, realizing with sickening clarity that the docile, obedient housewife they had manipulated for over a decade had systematically dismantled their entire empire in less than twenty-four hours.

With a trembling hand, Richard picked up a Montblanc pen—a pen I had gifted him for his seventieth birthday—and signed his name at the bottom of the page.
Daniel followed suit, his tears smudging the wet ink as he scribbled his signature, effectively erasing twelve years of marriage, status, and luxury with a single stroke.
