Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

At 5:45 a.m., the gray light of dawn began to bleed through the rain-streaked windows of the federal courthouse steps downtown.
My hands were steady. My mind was razor-sharp.
Marcus had stayed behind with the vehicle while I walked alone up the massive granite steps of the federal building carrying a single manila envelope containing the St. Jude’s psychiatric file, the uncorrupted video recovery export from St. Mary’s Hospital, and a sworn affidavit detailing Dennis Vance’s illegal server wipe operations.
As I reached the top landing of the steps, the automatic glass doors slid open, and a woman stepped out into the cold morning air.
It wasn't a federal prosecutor.
It was Kate Vance.
She was wearing her dark wool coat, her hair neatly styled, looking as calm and collected as if she were stepping out for a morning latte. Standing a few paces behind her was Sarah, looking pale, exhausted, and hollowed out by grief, her eyes red-rimmed from crying all night in the hospital waiting room.
Kate stopped dead in her tracks when she saw me standing there.
For a split second, the polished, confident mask slipped. Her eyes widened in genuine shock, her breath catching in her throat as she realized I wasn't locked inside a maximum-security prison cell three counties away.
"Daniel?" Sarah whispered, taking a trembling step forward. "How... how are you here? The police said you were arrested for..."
"For a crime your wife committed, Sarah," I said, my voice carrying across the empty plaza with a cold, absolute clarity that made Sarah freeze in her tracks.
Kate recovered her composure instantly, her mouth twisting into that familiar, venomous little smirk. She stepped smoothly in front of Sarah, shielding her like a guard dog protecting its territory.
"You’re violating a restraining order by being within five hundred feet of me or my family, Daniel," Kate said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Officer Vance already filed the emergency protective injunction an hour ago. You’re a fugitive. The police will be here in two minutes to finish what they started last night."
"They aren't coming, Kate," I said, stepping slowly down the granite steps toward her.
Kate’s smile faltered slightly. "What are you talking about?"
"I’m talking about the St. Jude’s psychiatric evaluation sitting in this envelope," I said, holding up the manila folder. "I’m talking about your four-year history of impulse control clinics, your father’s non-disclosure payoffs, and the unedited video footage from Trauma Bay 3 showing you coordinating your little framing operation right outside my daughter’s hospital door."
The color drained completely from Kate’s face. The cool, calculated aura vanished in an instant, replaced by a frantic, feral panic.
"Lies," Kate hissed, her voice rising in pitch. "That’s all fabricated trash! Sarah, don't listen to him! He’s insane! He’s the one who burned Lily!"
I didn't look at Kate. I looked past her, straight into the eyes of my ex-wife.
"Sarah," I said softly, my voice filled with every ounce of pain and truth I had carried for two years. "When you got to that hospital room last night, did you look at Lily’s arm? Did you look at the burn pattern? It wasn't an accident. It matched the cast-iron skillet on your kitchen stove—a skillet that Kate was using while you were still at work."
Sarah slowly turned her head to look at Kate. Her expression shifted from confusion to a terrifying, dawning horror.
"Kate..." Sarah whispered, her voice shaking violently. "Is that true? Did you... did you hurt my baby?"
"Sarah, don't be ridiculous!" Kate snapped, grabbing Sarah’s arm with manic desperation. "He’s manipulating you! He’s trying to destroy our family!"
"Don't touch her," I said, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous growl.
Before Kate could reply, the heavy glass doors of the federal courthouse swung open behind us. Three federal marshals, accompanied by Detective Briggs and an agent from the United States Department of Justice, stepped out onto the landing.
Briggs didn't look at me. He walked straight past my shoulder, stopping directly in front of Kate Vance.
He pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Katherine Vance," Briggs said, his voice echoing across the silent plaza. "You are under federal arrest for child endangerment, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and wire fraud."
Kate let out a sharp, piercing shriek of absolute rage, trying to pull away as the marshals grabbed her arms and snapped the cuffs securely around her wrists. "Get your hands off me! My father owns this city! You can't touch me! You hear me? You can't touch me!"

As they dragged her kicking and screaming down the granite steps toward the waiting federal transport vehicle, Sarah collapsed against the stone pillar, burying her face in her hands as silent, broken sobs finally tore through her chest.
I didn't gloat. I didn't smile. I turned around, walked down the steps toward my waiting friend Marcus, and prepared for the hardest part of all: walking back into St. Mary’s Hospital to hold my little girl.
