Chapter 2 - THE SECRETS WE KEEP

(Hook: August takes Marin to his sanctuary, but the boundaries between protector and captor begin to blur as a deadly trap is set.)
August brought Marin to his private estate—a heavily guarded, sprawling antebellum mansion hidden deep in the Garden District, surrounded by ancient oak trees draped in Spanish moss. It was the same house where his mother had once played the Bosendorfer, a fortress designed to keep the world out.
"You're keeping me prisoner," Marin said as she sat on a plush velvet sofa in his study. The scent of old books, mahogany, and expensive brandy filled her senses.
"I am keeping you alive," August replied from across the room. He poured himself a glass of water, his hand shaking slightly before he gripped the crystal tightly to steady it. "Victor Vance does not leave loose ends. If his men report back that you have the power to expose my condition, Vance will torture you until you tell him exactly what you felt."
"And what did I feel, August?" Marin asked softly, using his first name for the first time.
The room fell dead silent. August walked over and sat opposite her. The distance between them felt electric.
"A defect," August finally admitted, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Since birth. The valves are failing. The doctors gave me until my thirty-fifth birthday. That is six months from now."
Marin gasped softly. "Six months? And you have done nothing? No surgery? No treatment?"
"In my world, surgery means vulnerability," August said, his tone turning cold and pragmatic. "If I go under anesthesia for ten hours, Vance’s men will pay off the surgeon to ensure I never wake up. If I step down to recover, my own captains will tear this city apart fighting for my throne. I must remain standing until the very end."
"That is pride, not survival," Marin said, rising from the sofa. Guided by her acute spatial awareness, she walked toward him. She reached out, her fingers searching the air until they brushed his shoulder. She slid her hand down to his chest, pressing her palm firmly against his heart.
It was worse than before. The rhythm was wildly chaotic, a desperate, fluttering tempo.
"You are dying," she whispered, tears welling in her sightless eyes. "And you are doing it on purpose."
August didn't pull away this time. Instead, he placed his large hand over hers, pressing her palm deeper into his chest. "I have lived my entire life prepared to die, Marin. But I never expected anyone to care."
Before Marin could answer, the heavy double doors of the study burst open.

August’s chief of security, a towering man named Marcus, stood in the doorway, his face pale.
"Boss," Marcus said, his voice tense. "We have a problem. Vance just put a bounty on the blind piano tuner. Five million dollars for her, dead or alive. And someone inside our own organization just leaked her location."
