Chapter 3 - THE HUNTED

(Hook: Betrayed from within, August and Marin must flee into the treacherous Louisiana bayou as assassins close in.)

The betrayal was swift. Before August could order a lockdown, the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet of the Garden District night.

"Marcus, get the car!" August roared, drawing a sleek black pistol from beneath his coat. He grabbed Marin’s hand, pulling her close to his side. "Stay with me. Do not let go of my hand, no matter what."

"I can't see where we're going!" Marin cried as the deafening roar of automatic weapons echoed through the mansion's foyer. Glass shattered upstairs, raining down like frozen rain.

"I am your eyes," August muttered, his voice calm despite the adrenaline surging through his failing heart.

He led her through a hidden service corridor behind the pantry, moving fast. Marin could feel the immense physical toll the exertion was taking on him. His hand was freezing, soaked in cold sweat, and his breathing was ragged and gasping.

As they reached the back courtyard, three masked gunmen stepped out from the shadows of the oak trees.

"Rail!" one shouted, raising his weapon.

August didn't hesitate. He pushed Marin behind a brick pillar and fired three precise shots. The gunmen collapsed into the wet grass, but August stumbled, clutching his chest with his left hand. He let out a low, agonizing groan, dropping to one knee.

"August!" Marin knelt beside him, her hands frantically searching his face, his chest. His heart was beating so fast it felt like a vibrating wire about to snap. "You're having an attack. Stop! You have to rest!"

"No... time," August gasped, forcing himself back to his feet through sheer, terrifying willpower. "They're... coming."

Marcus pulled up in a black armored SUV, the tires screeching on the gravel. He leaped out, firing back at the main house to cover them. "Get in! Now!"

August shoved Marin into the back seat and piled in after her. As Marcus slammed on the gas, bursting through the estate's iron gates, a hail of bullets peppered the reinforced glass.

As they sped away into the dark, rainy night, leaving the city behind and heading deep into the treacherous swamps of the bayou, Marin cradled August’s head in her lap. His skin was gray, and his lips were tinged with blue.

"Why are you protecting me?" she wept, wiping the sweat from his forehead. "I am a stranger. I am nothing to you."

August looked up at her with fading eyes. "Because you heard me, Marin. For twenty years, I've been a ghost. You made me feel like a man again."
