Chapter 6 - THE SHOWDOWN IN THE DARK

The air inside the steel vault was already growing cold, the heavy ventilation fans grinding to a sudden, ominous halt.
Inside, Daniel immediately pulled Carmen and Lily behind the heavy steel row of deposit boxes, shielding them with his body. Lily began to cry, clutching Carmen’s neck, terrified by the flashing red lights and the blaring alarm.
"Daniel, what do we do?!" Carmen panicked, holding Lily tight. "We're trapped!"
Daniel looked at the thick leather journal in his hands, then at the black USB drive.
"They can't get inside this vault without the physical master key," Daniel whispered rapidly. "The vault locks automatically during an emergency shutdown. They're trying to force us to open it from the inside by cutting the air."
"How long do we have before the air runs out?" Carmen asked, her breathing speeding up.
"Thirty minutes... maybe less with three of us," Daniel said, looking at Lily’s small, frightened face. "I won't let anything happen to her, Carmen. I swear to you."
Outside the vault glass, Vanessa paced impatiently, tapping the barrel of her gun against the reinforced pane.
"Ten seconds, Daniel!" Vanessa’s voice echoed through the intercom. "Give me the flash drive through the document slot, or I start the oxygen purge cycle! You have no allies left! The SEC is seizing your assets right now! My father is at the Whitfield headquarters signing the emergency transfer papers! IT'S OVER!"
"Vanessa!" Daniel walked up to the glass, holding the black USB drive in his hand where she could see it. "You don't have to do this! If you kill us, it turns from financial fraud into murder! You'll spend the rest of your life in a federal prison!"
Vanessa laughed—a loud, manic sound that echoed cold and empty. "Prison is for poor people, Daniel! With your money and my father's connections, we'll be on a private jet to a non-extradition country before the sun sets! NOW OPEN THE SLOT!"
"No," Daniel said coldly.
Vanessa’s smile turned feral. She reached down to the wall panel and smashed her hand against the red PURGE button.
A loud, violent hiss erupted from the ceiling vents inside the vault. The ambient air pressure plummeted instantly, making Carmen’s ears pop. Lily let out a painful cry, covering her ears.
"Daniel!" Carmen cried out, dropping to her knees as the air began to thin, making her dizzy.
Suddenly, behind Vanessa and her three armed guards, the heavy glass doors of the bank lobby shattered into tens of thousands of flying shards!
A flashbang grenade bounced across the marble floor, exploding with a blinding white light and a deafening BOOM!
Vanessa screamed, dropping her gun and clutching her face as gray smoke instantly filled the outer room.
Through the smoke, Marcus burst forward like a shadow, wielding a heavy tactical shotgun. Before Vanessa's guards could raise their weapons, Marcus fired three rapid shots. Rubber non-lethal rounds slammed into the guards' chests, sending them flying backward onto the hard marble floor, writhing in pain.
Vanessa scrambled on her hands and knees through the smoke, trying to reach her gun, but Marcus stepped on her wrist with his combat boot, grinding it into the floor until she shrieked and let go.
"Emergency override!" Marcus yelled toward the vault glass, pointing at the wall console outside. "Daniel, hit the green manual release handle on the right inside wall!"
Daniel didn't hesitate. He lunged across the vault, grabbed the heavy steel emergency handle, and pulled it down with all his body weight.
With a massive hiss of pressurized air, the six-ton steel vault door unlatched and slowly swung open.
Fresh air rushed into the vault. Carmen fell forward, gasping for breath, pulling Lily into her arms as they breathed in the sweet, cold oxygen.
Daniel rushed out of the vault, grabbing the fallen pistol from the floor. He stepped over the groaning bodyguards and stood directly over Vanessa Cole.
Vanessa lay on her back, her hair messy, her expensive makeup ruined by tears and smoke, staring up at Daniel with wild, terrified eyes.
"Daniel... please," she sobbed, backing away on her elbows until her back hit the marble counter. "I was forced into this! My father... he threatened to abandon me! He made me do it!"
Daniel looked down at her, his eyes devoid of any lingering affection, holding the gun steady at his side.
"You mentioned my mother, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You tried to destroy her legacy. You threatened a three-year-old child."
He tossed the gun to Marcus, then pulled his phone from his pocket. The screen lit up—Arthur Vance’s name was on the caller ID. Daniel picked it up.
"Arthur," Daniel said into the phone. "I have the evidence. Victor Cole's entire extortion operation is on this drive. Is the press still at the Whitfield headquarters?"
"The press, the SEC, and the FBI are all in the main boardroom right now, Daniel," Arthur replied through the speaker. "Victor Cole is currently sitting at your late mother's desk, holding a press conference announcing his takeover."

Daniel looked down at Vanessa, a cold, ruthless smile touching his lips.
"Tell the press to keep the cameras rolling," Daniel said. "We're coming to give them the final chapter."
