Chapter 1 - THE BADGE REVEALThe shattering of porcelain against the mahogany table wasn’t just the end of a marriage; it was the starting pistol for an investigation.

Silence blanketed the dining room. Genesis gasped, clutching her pearls, while Jackson’s father, Richard, stood up, his face flushing a furious crimson. Jackson himself was breathing heavily, his chest heaving as the adrenaline of his temper tantrum wore off and the reality of what he had just done began to settle in.

I didn't flinch. I didn’t blink.

Instead, I slowly reached up, unbuttoned my wool coat, and let it slip off my shoulders, letting it drape over the back of my chair.

Beneath it, the crisp, dark navy uniform of the United States Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) commanded the room. The brass insignia caught the warm chandelier light. The Special Agent badge gleamed proudly on my chest.

Jackson took half a step back, his bravado instantly evaporating.

"Jackson," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy air like a scalpel, perfectly calm, perfectly controlled. "You just committed assault with a deadly weapon—a ceramic plate—in the presence of multiple witnesses. Furthermore, under federal and state laws, attempting to coerce a service member into yielding real estate through intimidation, extortion, and psychological abuse carries severe legal consequences."

"Maya—wait, honey, let's not get carried away," Jackson stammered, his voice cracking. The dominant, swaggering husband of two minutes ago was gone, replaced by a terrified boy hiding behind his mother.

"Don't call me honey," I replied smoothly, pulling my phone from my pocket. I tapped the screen twice. "CID Dispatch, this is Special Agent Maya Vance, Badge 4099. I am requesting an immediate local police dispatch and a military police liaison to 4428 Sycamore Lane. Code 2. Domestic disturbance involving assault and suspected fraudulent conspiracy."

"You... you called the cops on your own husband?" Genesis shrieked, slamming her palms onto the table. "You ungrateful little witch! We took you in! We accepted you!"

"You didn't take me in, Genesis. I bought this house—and every single piece of furniture in it—four years before Jackson and I even met," I said, stepping away from the table. "And as for the 'conspiracy' part? I’ve spent the last ten years investigating white-collar criminals, embezzlement rings, and identity thieves who were smarter, richer, and far more dangerous than any of you. You thought you could bully a wife. You accidentally declared war on an investigator."

Richard slammed his fist on the table. "You can't do this! We are family! Jackson, do something!"

Jackson opened his mouth, but before he could speak, the distant wail of sirens began to echo up the quiet suburban street. Red and blue lights flashed against the living room windows, painting the walls in an ominous strobe.

I walked toward the front door, pausing with my hand on the brass knob. I turned back to look at the stunned, panicking family.

"Pack your bags," I said softly. "The investigation has officially commenced."
