Chapter 10 - THE ULTIMATE VICTORYSix months later, the federal courthouse steps were bathed in brilliant morning sunlight.

The trial of Evelyn Sterling and her international syndicate had concluded with a sweeping, historic victory for federal prosecutors. Multiple life sentences without parole, total asset forfeiture across three continents, and the complete dismantling of a multi-billion-dollar transnational laundering ring.

Richard, Genesis, and Jackson were serving their respective federal sentences in separate minimum-to-medium security facilities across the country, entirely forgotten by the world they had tried to manipulate.

I stood on the courthouse steps, wearing my Class-A CID dress uniform, the afternoon sun glinting off my brass badges and service ribbons.

Marcus walked up beside me, holding a thick leather portfolio and smiling warmly.

"Well, Agent Vance," Marcus chuckled, handing me a final official document. "The last of the civil suits is settled. Every single offshore account has been liquidated, and the state department approved your commendation medal for the international syndicate takedown."

I took the document, flipping it open to see the official seal of the United States Department of Defense.

"It wasn't a one-person job, Marcus," I replied, looking out over the bustling city streets where thousands of innocent people walked in safety, completely unaware of the invisible wars fought to keep them secure. "It was just a matter of proper investigation."

Marcus shook his head, laughing softly. "You know, Maya, when Jackson threw that plate at dinner six months ago, he thought he was ending your life. If he had any idea who he was actually dealing with, he probably would have crawled out of the window instead."

I looked down at my badge, remembering the shattered porcelain, the arrogant sneer on Jackson’s face, and the terrified realization in his eyes when he finally understood the truth.

Some people spend their lives trying to break others down to build themselves up.

And some people are born to uphold the law, protect what is theirs, and hunt predators into the dark.

I closed the folder, turned away from the courthouse steps, and walked forward into the bright, unwritten future—entirely unbroken, completely unstoppable, and ready for whatever case came next.
