Chapter 8 - THE GHOST FROM THE PASTLife returned to a sharp, beautiful routine.

My apartment was once again my sanctuary—quiet, pristine, and entirely mine. The smart locks had been upgraded with military-grade encryption, and the living room wall where the ceramic plate had shattered had been repaired, repainted, and now featured a stunning piece of modern abstract art that I chose simply because it made me smile.

One evening, as I was reviewing case files at my kitchen island, my secure encrypted cell phone—my direct CID operational line—buzzed sharply.

Unusual for a Tuesday night.

I picked it up and swiped to unlock. “Special Agent Vance. Urgent tasking directive from Headquarters. Secure line requested.”

I tapped the secure connection app, placing my thumbprint scanner on the screen for biometric verification.

"Special Agent Vance listening," I stated crisply.

"Maya? Thank god you're online," a familiar voice crackled through the secure speaker. It was Director Vance (unrelated, again, but a legendary figure in federal counter-intelligence).

"Director. What’s the situation?"

"I know you just wrapped up the Sterling embezzlement fallout, but we have a new priority tasking that requires your exact skill set. High-level white-collar cartel laundering ring operating out of a major defense contractor front."

I raised an eyebrow, leaning back in my barstool. "Defense contractor? Sounds like my specialty. Who’s the target?"

"A shell corporation operating under the front name Sterling & Wright Associates—or rather, what's left of their international syndicate partners in Europe. We traced the secondary bank accounts Jackson and Richard set up. They weren't just embezzling domestic funds; they were a domestic washing machine for an international syndicate."

A slow, knowing smile spread across my face.

So the rabbit hole went even deeper than I thought. Richard and Genesis weren't just greedy suburban grifters—they were small-time pawns in a much larger, highly dangerous international criminal web. And by tearing down their local operation, I had inadvertently tugged on a thread that led straight to an international conspiracy.

"Send me the encrypted dossier," I said, my pulse quickening with the familiar, thrilling rush of the hunt.

"It's already downloading to your secure terminal," the Director replied. "Be careful, Maya. These people don't throw plates when they're angry. They eliminate threats."

"Let them try," I said softly. "I'm a CID Special Agent. And I'm just getting started."
