CHAPTER 1: THE DOG NOBODY WANTED

The rain had been falling all morning.
Cold drops slid down the shelter windows while dozens of dogs barked endlessly behind metal bars.
For most visitors, this place was full of hope.
For some dogs, it was their last chance.
Twenty-year-old Emily slowly pushed her wheelchair through the narrow corridor.
The shelter worker accompanying her tried his best to sound cheerful.
"Take your time. We have plenty of wonderful dogs."
Emily smiled politely.
But inside, she felt nervous.
Ever since the accident that had taken away the use of her legs three years earlier, life had become painfully lonely.
Friends disappeared.
Her fiancé left.
People looked at her with pity.
The silence at home had become unbearable.
She wasn't looking for a pet.
She was looking for someone who understood what it felt like to be abandoned.
One by one she stopped in front of different kennels.
Golden Retrievers wagged their tails.
Labradors jumped excitedly.
Small puppies barked for attention.
They were adorable.
But none of them felt right.
Then she noticed a kennel hidden in the far corner.
A German Shepherd.
Massive.
Powerful.
Motionless.
Unlike the others, he didn't bark.
Didn't jump.
Didn't even look at visitors.
He simply lay there, staring at the wall.
"What about him?" Emily asked.
The worker immediately stiffened.
"No."
Emily looked surprised.
"No?"
The man sighed.
"His name is Rex."
The moment he spoke the dog's name, several employees exchanged uncomfortable glances.
"He attacked three trainers."
Emily frowned.
"Seriously?"
The man nodded.
"He was brought here six months ago after his owner died."
"What happened?"
"No one knows."
The worker lowered his voice.
"But after the funeral, something changed inside him."
Emily slowly looked back at the Shepherd.
His ears twitched.
For a brief moment, she thought she saw sadness in his eyes.
"We couldn't rehabilitate him," the worker continued.
"He bites. He growls. He refuses food sometimes."
"Has he ever seriously hurt anyone?"
The man hesitated.
Then nodded.
"A volunteer needed stitches."
Emily remained silent.
The worker expected her to move on.
Instead she pointed directly at the kennel.
"I want to meet him."
The employee stared at her as if she had lost her mind.
"Ma'am, that's a terrible idea."
Emily looked down at her wheelchair.
"People said the same thing about me after my accident."
The worker didn't know how to respond.
Several minutes later, he reluctantly agreed.
As the kennel door opened, every conversation inside the shelter suddenly stopped.
Everyone watched.
Waiting.
Holding their breath.
Because everyone knew one thing.
Rex hated strangers.
May you like
And nobody believed this meeting would end well.
What happened next would leave the entire shelter speechless.
