Chapter 5 - The Glass TrapSophia didn't drop the folder. She held it firmly against her chest, her thumb tucked under the ribbon seal.

"You knew what was in here, didn't you?" she said, her voice echoing in the brightly lit gallery. "You knew your father left the voting control away from you."

Lucas stepped down the stairs slowly, his leather shoes tapping sharply against the wood. "My father was an old man who lost his mind at the end. He thought he was playing a game of chess with people who were operating in the real world."

"He wasn't crazy, Lucas," Sophia said, backing up slowly toward the display cases behind her. "He knew you and your mother were cooking the books at the medical group. He knew about the offshore debt."

"And what good does knowing it do him now?" Lucas asked, stopping ten feet away. The two men behind him fanned out, blocking the exit to the stairs. "He's dead. The board answers to me. And as of eight o'clock tomorrow morning, the merger with Vance Bio-Tech goes through. Once that ink is dry, Aegis Shoreline absorbs the debt, and your signature—whether forged or authentic—becomes the primary legal record of accountability."

Elena stepped in front of Sophia, her hands trembling but her posture firm. "You won't hurt her, Lucas. I'll call the police right now."

Lucas didn't even look at Elena. He raised a hand, and one of the men stepped forward, grabbing Elena’s arm and forcing her phone from her grip.

"Don't touch her!" Sophia shouted, stepping forward.

"Then give me the folder, Sophia," Lucas said, reaching out an open hand. "Give me the paper, sign the non-disclosure agreement, and I'll let you walk out of here with ten million dollars. You can leave the country. You can start over. You can have whatever life you wanted before you met me."

Sophia looked at the man she had lived with for five years. The man she had cooked for, cared for, and believed in when he said he wanted to change his family's ruthless legacy.

"You really think money fixes this?" she asked softly. "You let your brother kick me. You let your mother pull my hair while I was on my knees. You stood there and told me to sign."

"Because if you had signed then, none of this would be happening!" Lucas suddenly shouted, his composure snapping for a brief moment. "If you had just done what you were told, I could have protected you! I could have kept you safe in the house! But you had to be smart. You had to look at the servers. You had to go into the safe!"

"I had to survive," Sophia corrected him.

She slowly unzipped her handbag. Lucas’s eyes narrowed, his body tensing, expecting a weapon or a secondary drive.

Instead, Sophia pulled out a small, red metallic cylinder—no larger than a pen.

"Do you know what this is, Lucas?" she asked.

Lucas frowned. "A flash drive?"

"It’s an optical signal transmitter," Sophia said calmly. "It’s currently paired via Bluetooth to a high-speed satellite uplink sitting in a vehicle parked across the street. The moment I press the top of this cylinder, high-resolution scans of every single page in this folder will be uploaded directly to the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division, the SEC, and the chief editor of the Boston Globe."

Lucas’s face went pale. "You’re bluffing. The library has signal dampeners in the masonry."

"I upgraded the library’s network two years ago, remember?" Sophia said, a cold smile touching her lips. "I installed micro-repeaters in the light fixtures right above your head."

Lucas instinctively looked up at the ceiling lights.

"Grab her!" he ordered his men.

Before the guards could take a step, Sophia slammed her thumb down on the red cylinder.

A sharp, high-pitched beep echoed through the gallery.

"Upload complete," a clear, synthesized voice chimed from the device.

Lucas stared at her, his eyes wide with utter shock. "You... you just destroyed us."

"No, Lucas," Sophia said, stepping past him as his guards hesitated, unsure of what to do now that the data was gone. "You destroyed yourselves five years ago. I just let the light in."
