Chapter 6 - The Fall of the EmpireBy sunrise, the story broke across every major financial news network in the country.

"WHITMORE ENTERPRISES INC. FACES MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD INVESTIGATION; BOARD MEMBERS SUBPOENAED"

The stock price of Whitmore Holdings plummeted thirty-four percent within the first twenty minutes of the market opening. Outside the Whitmore estate, news vans and reporters lined the perimeter fence, cameras aimed at the grand iron gates that remained tightly shut.

Inside the mansion, chaos had taken over.

Margaret sat on the velvet sofa in the main living room, watching the television screen in horrified silence. News anchors were displaying leaked documents—the very scans Sophia had sent the night before—showing the paper trail connecting Aegis Shoreline to the illegal clinical trial debts.

"Where is Lucas?" Margaret demanded, her voice hoarse. "Where is my son?!"

Chase was sitting at the bar, pouring his third glass of whiskey despite it being barely eight in the morning. "He’s upstairs with the lawyers. They’re trying to figure out if we can file for emergency bankruptcy before the federal marshals serve the freeze order."

"Bankruptcy?" Margaret gasped, her pearls shaking against her chest once again. "The Whitmores do not file for bankruptcy! We built this city!"

"We built it on fraud, Mother!" Chase suddenly screamed, throwing his glass across the room. It shattered against the marble fireplace. "You and Dad! You set up those clinical accounts! You made Lucas execute the transfers! And now that scholarship girl has put all our names on an indictment list!"

The door to the study opened, and Richard Whitmore walked in, accompanied by two men in dark suits holding leather document cases.

"What are you doing here, Richard?" Margaret demanded, standing up. "Did you come to gloat?"

"I came to deliver the board’s decision," Richard said smoothly, pulling a signed document from his case. "As of seven-thirty this morning, an emergency meeting of the board of directors was convened via video link. By a vote of seven to two, Lucas has been removed as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately."

"You can't do that!" Margaret shrieked. "We hold the majority shares!"

"You held the majority shares until Arthur's true will was verified by the probate court an hour ago," Richard replied, his voice deadly calm. "The court has recognized the conditional clause in Section IV. The voting rights do not belong to you, to Lucas, or to Chase. They have been placed under the control of an independent court-appointed trustee."

Margaret stumbled back, catching herself on the edge of the sofa. "Who... who is the trustee?"

Richard stepped aside, pointing toward the front entrance of the mansion.

The heavy front doors swung open.

Walking into the foyer, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, her dark hair pinned back neatly, and her posture completely erect, was Sophia. Beside her walked Evelyn Vance and two federal investigators carrying official badges.

Chase stared at her in utter disbelief. "You... you can't be here. This is private property!"

"Actually, Chase," Evelyn Vance spoke up, stepping forward with a court document in hand, "this property is registered under the Whitmore Family Real Estate Trust—a subsidiary whose assets have just been frozen by the federal court pending the outcome of the corporate fraud investigation. Mrs. Sophia Whitmore, as the temporary administrative representative designated by the probate trustee, has full legal authority to control access to this premises."

Sophia walked slowly into the center of the foyer, stopping at the exact spot where, three days ago, Margaret had pulled her hair and Chase had kicked her ribs.

She looked down at the marble floor. The faint stain from her split lip had been cleaned away, but the memory was permanently etched into the room.

Lucas walked down the grand staircase, his tie loosened, his eyes red from lack of sleep. He stopped on the bottom step, looking down at his wife.

"Sophia," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "Is this what you wanted? To destroy everything my family built?"

Sophia looked up at him, her expression calm, cold, and unyielding.

"Your family didn't build this, Lucas," she said softly. "You stole it. Page by page, person by person, lie by lie. I didn't destroy your family."

May you like

She paused, looking at Margaret, then Chase, and finally back to Lucas.

"You did that all by yourselves."
