Chapter 10 - THE FINAL LEDGERThe rain had stopped by midnight, leaving the streets of downtown Chicago slick, gleaming, and reflecting the brilliant neon pulse of the metropolis.

Inside the private study of the Oak Street brownstone, the massive mahogany table was entirely clear of maps, pins, and yarn lines. Instead, a single, leather-bound ledger sat open beneath the warm, amber glow of a brass desk lamp.

Alina sat in the high-backed leather chair, a gold-nibbed fountain pen poised gracefully between her fingers.

Christian stood by the tall arched windows, looking out into the quiet, moonlit courtyard, his dark suit jacket draped over the back of a nearby sofa.

"Is it finished?" he asked softly, without turning around.

Alina traced the edge of the crisp white paper with the tip of her pen. Every account was balanced. Every shell company was accounted for. Every threat to the family’s foundation had been neutralized, integrated, or erased.

"It’s finished," she said, her voice steady, clear, and carrying the absolute weight of command. "The ledger is clean."

Christian turned slowly, walking across the Persian rug until he stood beside her chair. He looked down at the open book, then up into her dark, unyielding eyes—eyes that had once looked up in terror from behind a diner counter, and now surveyed an entire city with absolute sovereignty.

A slow, rare, and entirely genuine smile broke across his face—the smile of a predator who had finally found his equal.

Christian reached out, placing his hand over hers, guiding the gold nib down to the bottom of the final page to sign their name to the legacy.

"Good," Christian whispered, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss to her lips as the midnight bells echoed across the silent spires of Chicago. "Now... let's begin the next chapter."
